He and his wife Marianna (nee Haraszti) celebrated their 46 beautiful years of marriage together just days before his death. Beloved father of Frank (Tina), Marianne (Philip Boyd) and Nadine (Keith Kocho). Adored grandfather to Thomas, Adam and Pippa Csathy, Natalie, Catherine, and Elizabeth Boyd, and Nathaniel, Sophie and William Kocho. (His 10th grandchild is expected in December). Brother of Eva (Gaspar). Predeceased by his brothers Denes and Ivan and sisters Marta (Fizely), Aniko (Roob) and Judith (Lipcsey). Predeceased by his parents Gyorgy (Kriston Csathy) and Marta (Michnay).
Tom and Marianna built a joyful life, and shared their blessings generously with family, friends and associates. He loved God, and lived by his faith. He had profound respect for whomever he came in contact with. An animal lover, he will be sadly missed by Mowgli and Elsa. He "adopted" animals from dogs to donkeys throughout the course of his life. A sportsman and athlete, Tom enjoyed playing soccer, tennis, ping-pong and fishing, and liked to follow competitive sports. He was witty, brilliant, and loving to his last breath.
Tom was born in Kaposvar, Hungary in 1931. He was a student leader in the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Following its suppression he went to Scotland, where he finished at the top of his class in Civil Engineering at Glasgow. He completed his Masters degree on a scholarship to Queen's University in Kingston, Canada.
He worked for 20 years at IBM, starting as a Systems Engineering Trainee and eventually, in turn, heading up the Systems Engineering, Marketing, Sales, and Finance functions of IBM Canada. He served for 3 ½ years as President of Burroughs Corp. (Unisys), and 3 years as President of Cognos, Inc. In 1989 he became self-employed, mentoring presidents of smaller high-tech companies, and serving as chairman and director of some, including MOSAID Technologies Inc. and MED-Eng Systems Inc. He loved his work.
The family is grateful for the warmth and kindness of his faithful physician, Dr. Juanita Crook.
The family will receive friends at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home (6150 Yonge Street), from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, August 8. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, August 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary R.C. Church (432 Sheppard Ave. E.). Cremation.
