Dear Mrs. Fernandes and family, We are saddened to learn of the sad news of Thomas. We have no words to express how sorry we are at your tragic loss. Our thoughts and sympathy go out to you and the family. We were immediate neighbours of Thomas and his family in Nairobi, Kenya and I knew Thomas from his childhood until he left Nairobi to go to Kampala. I lost contact with him and other members of his family when my family and I migrated to Germany. I often enquired after him through our other friends in Canada, but unfortunately, I did not have a chance to revive our childhood and long friendship.

It has been only the past two years that I have known Tom. During that time, we have shared many coffee mornings, professional discussions and stories over lunch about his years in Uganda and Kenya. Tom was a quiet man but with a little prodding, narratives about his computer business and happy times with his family came gushing forth. Tom was of that dying breed of men who are known as gentlemen. He was kind and meek in the sense of the "meek inheriting the earth". If he had any dislikes and peeves, I rarely heard of them. It was a privilege to have known Tom and my regret is not to have been able to say goodbye. Happiness forever Tom, in the shadow of your Creator.
