After a well-lived and fulfilling life, we announce the peaceful passing of Wayne Chuck Gan in his 97th year on Saturday, December 4th, 2021, at Mon Sheong Long Term Private Care in Markham. Beloved husband of May (Joanne) Gan. Loving and devoted father to Tyrone (Hilda), Caron (Gerry), and Seymore (Nancy). Dear brother of Wayne Shick Gan (Irene). Wonderful grandfather to Brian, Becky, Kevin, Jenn (Steve), Chris (Cindy), Nicholas (Stacey), Daniella (Alex), and Melanie. Delighted great grandfather to Layla, Caiden, Austin, and Isla.
Chuck was born in Guangdong, China on January 19th, 1925 to Joe and Lena Gan. He attended Nanking University after World War II with his trusty motorcycle. Chuck immigrated to Canada with his future wife May in 1950, settled in Windsor, Ontario and married in 1951 – the beginning of a 70-year long and loving union. Chuck began a long and successful career in the restaurant business in Windsor with the Commodore Supper Club, Jolim, Gan’s, and Mai Mai, serving storied customers from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Yankees, and later opening the Sunset Terrace restaurant after moving to Toronto. In spite of the long hours in the restaurant business, Chuck was a loving and dedicated father to his three children, creating wonderful memories of the skating rink he created every winter, summer trips to Point Pelee, buying fresh corn on the cob from the farms, and excursions to Bob-Lo Island. Chuck taught and showed the value of education and hard work. He was recognized in the Chinese community in Windsor for sponsoring over a hundred new immigrants from China to Canada, helping to provide housing and employment. In the limited spare time he had for himself, he enjoyed building hi-fi sets from kits, attending Broadway shows and musicals in Detroit, performing in Chinese operas, photography and developing photos in his darkroom, shooting movies with his Super 8 camera, and renovating our house. In their well-deserved retirement, he and May were finally able to enjoy some of the fruits of his career, including ballroom dancing, tai chi, making the most delicious family feasts (including his famous Chuck’s Easy Chicken), babysitting the grandkids, travelling to Asia, Europe, Florida, and cruising the Caribbean. A life-long sports fan right to the end, he was passionate about the success of his Leafs, Detroit Tigers, Blue Jays and Raptors – and we laughed and groaned along with him. Chuck has always said his biggest joy and accomplishment was his family. His legacy is an extended family now numbering 24, soon to be 25. His joy and laughter will be missed by all of us; our memories and love will last forever.
We extend our gratitude to Mon Sheong staff for their kind and compassionate care over the past 2 years. All are encouraged to commemorate Chuck’s life through a charitable donation to the Mon Sheong Foundation through Tribute Giving – Mon Sheong Foundation.
A private celebration with family will take place on December 11, 2021. We encourage all to share a favourite memory of Chuck on this memorial page.
