My dearest Siham and family, Maurice and I were devastated to hear the sad news of William's death. Sadly, I hadn't seen him for many years, but my last memory of him was at a party we all attended when we were young. You were holding hands and you both looked so much in love. I didn't have the pleasure of renewing our friendship as adults, but I hear from all the families I have spoken to that he was a fine husband and father. We want you to know that our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time. May you all have the strength to face to the sorrow and emptiness you will inevitably feel. I have known William and Siham since I was a child in Beirut when they were "friends of my parents" and I was friends with Hania, Rula and Reem. At the time they were Ammo William and Auntie Siham. We met again twenty odd years later when my husband and I immigrated to Canada. Ammo William and Auntie Siham appointed themselves our surrogate parents, adopting Raja and I, helping us settle, easing our transition, and alleviating our homesickness. In time they became William and Siham and our relationship developed into a close, mutual and valued friendship. William and Siham never forgot a birthday or anniversary, our favourite dishes or preferred drinks. Even during the last few weeks of his life, William remained the same caring and thoughtful person he had always been. He asked about family members and work, and shared memories of his friendship with my father during the 60s and 70s. And he still managed his wide, warm and welcoming smile.

Dearest Siham, Hania, Rula and Reem, I hope that knowing you do not grieve alone the passing of dear William offers a small measure of consolation. There are hundreds of people who knew William over the years who mourn with you the loss of a man who was always a true and loyal friend. William was always there for those who needed him. He was a friend, a father, a brother, a mentor, an advisor, a supporter, to anyone who needed it. He will always be remembered for his generous spirit, his big heart, his kindness, his warmth, and his expansive, unreserved and infectious smile. Even as we mourn his loss, we feel fortunate to have known an admirable, honourable man—a true human being—and to have been part of his big life. May he rest in peace. Thuraya
