Diedra (“Dee” Gillespie) O'Kelly, born September 10, 1944 in Denver, Colorado, passed away peacefully at home the afternoon of October 2, 2024. Following her diagnosis with primary peritoneal cancer, she underwent surgeries, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. Dee fought with tenacity, authenticity, and kindness for 19 and a half months before entering home hospice. She told every person she spoke to with ovaries to please talk with their doctor about having them removed once they are “finished using them” as a public service announcement because ovarian, peritoneal, and fallopian tube cancer are almost always diagnosed at stage III (like hers was) or later.
A lifelong public servant, Dee began her career caring for children at the former State Hospital while attending Pueblo State College (now Colorado State University Pueblo). After college, she worked for President Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty in Brighton, and began teaching before temporarily putting her career on hold to start a family. Once her two children were safely through first and third grades, she found her life's passion as an elementary school educator, working more than twenty years at Federal Heights Elementary. She is preceded in death by her husband Norm, her parents Emmett and Viola (Valente) Gillespie, extended family, and friends. She is survived by her daughter Alison, son Brendan (Tara Fickle), granddaughter Mimi, brother John Gillespie (Renee), their children and grandchildren, and many beloved family members and friends, including her community of retired teachers.
We hope you will join us in continuing to honor her legacy with laughter, enjoyment of music, the beauty of the outdoors, and nurturing your families and friendships as she has always done.
