Florence’s early life was marked by hardship, resilience, and courage. She was born into an affluent family whose legacy was destroyed by the violence of the communist revolution. The ancestral home, land and possessions were confiscated and the family perished. Florence’s father, Kam, escaped to Hong Kong, while Florence, her mother Hing, and her younger brother remained behind. He was lost to scarlet fever.
For around a decade, Florence and her mother lived in dire circumstances, enduring forced labor and oppression. But in 1959, after years of separation, Florence and her mother were reunited with Kam in Hong Kong, where Florence found a new sense of hope and determination. There, she thrived as a skilled beautician, excelling in hairdressing and manicures. Florence’s journey to America began in 1968, when she married her high school sweetheart, Jimmy, and moved to California.
By the mid- 1970s, they had two daughters and settled in Colorado. In 1975, after years of hard work and sacrifice, they were able to bring Florence’s parents and siblings to the United States. They had one more daughter, Joyce, which completed the family. Together, Florence and Jimmy built a life filled with love, hard work, and dedication to their family and community.
Florence’s boundless humor, generosity, kindness, and infectious smile made her a cherished presence wherever she went. She was known for her hospitality, often going out of her way to help others, even offering rides to strangers and pulling over to assist fellow Chinese people on the road. She was a beloved figure in her community. Everyone knew and adored “Flo.”
In her later years, Florence enjoyed spending time with her husband, Jimmy, visiting Chinese restaurants, and playing the slots at the casino. She was always surrounded by joy and laughter. Her spirited memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know her.
Florence was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, Jimmy; her parents, Kam Lou, Hing Lou, and her brother "Little Heart." She is survived by her daughters and son in-laws: Janette (Jason), Julia (Tibor), and Joyce (Jose); her granddaughters, Aubrey, Jayde, and Jazmyne; her siblings: Tony, Helen, and Peter – and their progeny.
