Having been drafted while still in High School, Mr. Crane reported for military service immediately following his High School graduation. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He was assigned to the Military Police in California and Hawaii, and saw action in the South Pacific at Iwo Jima.
After the war, Herbert returned to Wingate, where he met Mary "Lucille" Fletcher, whose family had moved to the area during the war. Herbert and Lucille were married in 1951 and celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary in August. In addition to being survived by his wife, Herbert leaves four children: Debra (Mel) of Denver, Colorado, Rick of Thornton, Colorado, Roger (Kimberly) of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and Gary of Thornton, Colorado. He leaves four grandsons, (Tanner, Myles, Parker and Wesley), and one great-grandson, (Oakley). Herbert leaves relatives, friends and associates near and far who have been a part of his remarkable, long life.
The Cranes moved to the Denver area in 1959, where Herbert began his career with the U.S. Postal Service. The family moved to Thornton in 1961. Mr. Crane enjoyed traveling around the United States and particularly in the Rocky Mountains. He was an Assistant Youth Football Coach in Thornton, Colorado and was a "Band Parent." He took his family to the first Broncos game ever played at the old Bears Stadium and remained a Broncos fan for life. He loved watching any sport and listening to music, particularly when a family member participated.
