Herb was born March 3, 1929 to George and Helen (Rise) Shelton and was one of five children growing up in Veteran, Wyoming. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1946-1949 and upon discharge, returned to Julesburg, Colorado where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. There he met and married Lucille Schumann. After the birth of their three daughters, the family relocated to Kimball, Nebraska where he became manager for Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Co.
Herb joined the Army National Guard in 1954. In 1969 the family moved to Arvada, CO so he could accept a fulltime position with the Colorado National Guard, a job he loved. He proudly served the National Guard until his retirement as Lt Colonel in 1989. After Lucille’s death, Herb reunited with a childhood friend and in 2001 he married Dorothy Rimmer.
Herb was a hard worker and was always busy. He was an avid bowler and loved to garden. Friends and family remember his beautiful dahlias, sweet carrots and endless raspberries. He and Dorothy enjoyed traveling to faraway places. Both spent time volunteering at the Grace United Methodist Church. He was head of the Thursday morning work crew and he and Dorothy sang in the choir.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Dorothy, his three daughters: Barbara Stapleton, Katie Halverson, and Debe Boles, step-daughter, Cheryl Swanson, and his sister, Cora McClenahan. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Lucille, his parents George and Helen Shelton, his twin brother Bob, and brothers Frank and Glen.
Services will be held Thursday, September 16, 10:30 am at Grace United Methodist Church, 4905 E Yale Ave, Denver, CO 80222. Olinger Highland is handling the funeral arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to Soldiers Angels, (soldiersangel.org) or the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, (alzfdn.org).
He was loved.
