We are heartbroken to share that James “Jim” Barnes passed away unexpectedly on April 24, 2026. Jim was a devoted husband, father, mentor, friend, and proud union brother whose kindness, generosity, and unmistakable sense of humor touched everyone he met. His presence could light up any room, and his impact will be felt for years to come.
Jim began his service to others early in life, enlisting in the United States Navy on December 1, 1983, shortly after graduating high school. He served honorably until 1987. Following his time in the Navy, Jim pursued his education at the University of Texas at Austin, earning a degree in Construction Management.
After returning to Colorado, Jim joined Plumbers Local 3, where he earned his Journeyman license in 1990. Over the next 35 years, he built not only a successful career but also a lasting legacy within the union. Jim dedicated countless hours serving on the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC), where he interviewed, guided, and mentored aspiring members. He took great pride in helping others succeed and was deeply respected by his peers and colleagues.
On May 11, 1996, Jim married his soulmate, Claire Batts Barnes. Their love story spanned nearly three decades, filled with laughter, adventure, and countless cherished memories. Together, they shared a passion for travel, especially their annual trips to the Bahamas, where they created traditions that will forever be treasured.
Jim’s professional journey was one of hard work and dedication. Starting in the field installing pipe, he steadily rose to become a Senior Project Manager and Project Executive, working with respected companies including Trautman & Shreve, Apollo Mechanical Contractors, RK Mechanical, and Harris Company. No matter his title, Jim remained a mentor at heart—always willing to share his knowledge, lend support, and uplift those around him.
Jim’s passing leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be remembered for his unwavering support, his quick wit, and the genuine care he showed to everyone.
James is survived by his wife Claire, his mother, brother Jeff Barnes, his two children Lisa and Daniel as well as two wonderful grandchildren, RJ and Layla.
Go Fund me is being set up in order to support funeral costs and his wife Claire.
During this incredibly difficult time, we are asking for support to help Jim’s family with unexpected expenses, including funeral and memorial costs, and to provide stability for Claire and their loved ones as they navigate this profound loss. Any contribution, no matter the amount, will make a meaningful difference and is deeply appreciated.
If you are unable to give, we ask that you please keep the Barnes family in your thoughts and share this page with others who may wish to help. Thank you for your love, support, and kindness during this time.
