

John Gilbert Mitchell “Mitch,” of Northglenn, Colorado passed away peacefully at home on November 6, 2015. He was 83 years old.
John and his twin brother, Gilmer Dale, were born in Bearskin Creek, Pittsylvania County, Virginia to the late Martha Gilbert Mitchell and Fred Andrew Mitchell on May 1, 1932. After graduating from Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia, he studied at Bluefield College and then served in the Army. While stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs he met the love of his life, the late Marguerite “Margie” Cruz and they were married on June 11, 1955.
Mitch worked at Gates Rubber Company in Denver for 36 years. During those years he received numerous awards for his improvement ideas, hard work, and volunteering with the yearly United Way campaign. Mitch was proud of his military service and a devoted member of the American Legion Post 22 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Mitch loved life. He was an avid fisherman and pool player. He loved all sports, gardening, pulling slot machines, and spending time with his family. If you didn’t know Mitch before, once you met him you were a friend for life. He was a kind, loving, generous man.
Mitch is survived by his children, son John D. Mitchell (Alicia) of Windsor, CO; daughters Terry Madril (Mike) and June Mitchell (Santan Rodrigues) of Northglenn; sister Iris Fowlkes of Dry Fork, Virginia and brother Fred Mitchell (Elaine) of Bearskin Creek; grandchildren Michael Madril (Erica) of Sterling, CO, Tim Madril (Nicole) of Northglenn, Justin Mitchell (Lacey) and Levi Mitchell (Whitney) of Windsor; great-grandchildren Jaylah, Brycen, Mitchell, Marley, and Blakely; his faithful companion dog Sam; and many special nieces, nephews, sister-in-laws, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Marguerite Mitchell; twin brother Gilmer Dale Mitchell; and sister Kitty Napier.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Thursday at Olinger Highland Funeral Chapel in Thornton. Viewing from 9:00 – 10:00 am prior to the service. Interment following service at Olinger Highland Cemetery.
