Ken is survived by his loving wife, Margaret A. Hastings; children Jennifer (Scott) Van Dorsten, Dominick (Bre) Hastings, Kirstie (AJ Mayhew) Hastings and Kass Hastings; foster son Ricky Ambrugy; grandchildren Zechariah, Liam, Jackson, Trinity, Lucas and Genevieve; along with many nephews, nieces, family and friends.
Ken wrestled and played football during high school. He became a phenomenal baker and cook. His delicious cinnamon rolls led his wife Margie to him in a marriage that lasted 40 years. Ken worked in construction, drove a cab, and then became a driver for Hugh M. Woods. After his kidney transplant disabled him, he became Mr. Mom seeing to their children and holding down the fort while Margie worked outside the home. He continued by watching his grandsons and picking up his eldest grandson from school.
Family was the most important thing to Ken. He and Margie had 4 children, and became foster parents to numerous others. He almost never missed a sporting event, concert or other activity involving his children. Ken coached his sons, Dominick and Kass, in wrestling and was excited to hear that his grandson, Jackson, was now participating in youth wrestling. He also coached track and field for Dom, Kirstie and Kass. Ken formed a youth wrestling club in which he was active for many years and continued as a wrestling coach and referee until 2015. With their children grown now, Ken loved watching his grandson Zechariah play baseball, basketball, football and soccer. Ken loved visiting with family, attending family reunions and enjoyed genealogy. He loved being Papa to his 6 grandchildren, teaching them new things, and sharing his bottomless bowl of M&M’s.
Ken was often found fishing or hunting. The family enjoyed many summers camping in Grand Lake, Colorado where Ken had his favorite fishing holes. Ken patiently taught his kids, nephew, and others to fish. He was an avid elk hunter, spending many fall seasons in the mountains hunting with his late brother Lloyd and more recently with his wife and daughter Jennifer.
Aside from being a wonderful cook, Ken began quilting a few years ago. He took some quilting lessons this past spring and made some beautiful quilts for his grandchildren. He shared his talents by teaching his children cooking, canning and baking and then provided them with his constructive criticism of their results. He loved watching cooking shows and westerns on tv, along with playing games with his family.
Ken had an incredible will to live in spite of his health issues due to the love of his wife and family. He will be deeply missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, extended family and numerous friends, which he greatly cherished.
The life of Ken Hastings will be celebrated on Monday, January 7, 2019 at Mountainview Christian Church, 7777 W 99th Pl, Westminster, CO 80021 at 10:30 am with a luncheon to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers the family prefers donations to the Kidney Foundation.
