Norman was born in Salt Lake City, UT, to parents Harold Palm and Norma (Sammons) Palm. He was the 3rdborn among his sister and four brothers. They later moved to Thornton, CO, where he and his brothers became notorious as “those Palm boys” who kept the neighborhood on its toes with their practical jokes.
Norman graduated Mapleton High School and attended CU Boulder briefly. In 1965 he married high school sweetheart Melody Thrush, and had 2 daughters, Vicki and Brenda. In order to support his new family, he built a career as an accomplished electrical worker at Public Service company and supervisor despite the absence of formal training in that area, and on his own initiative he developed a device to allow his staff to safely test for live current before working on electrical supply lines. He sold these devices to multiple companies, but this source of income soon dried up as he made them of such high quality that they never needed replacement – he always put his best into everything. He supported his two daughters, Brenda and Vicki Palm, into adulthood.
Norman had a unique way of relating to others; those most loved by him quickly acquired the nickname “pal,” a name by which he addressed both his daughters as well as his three granddaughters, Morgan Picotte and Lauren and Emily Dinges. He often had difficulty expressing his feelings directly with other people, but was never without one of his beloved black labs, most recently Blue, who still grieves for him. He loved yelling at the Broncos on television with his family, watching westerns with “the Duke” and historical films, and listening to music at volumes that could be felt by neighbors several blocks away. He had a talent for disassembling, reconstructing, and with surprising frequency improving household devices. He was remarkable for his generosity, giving as much as he thought someone needed, and his stubbornness, refusing to accept “no” to such offers.
Norman is survived by his sister Carole Walker, his brothers Raymond Keith and his wife Connie, Albert and his wife Maureen, David and his wife Patricia, and sister-in-law Carlene along with several nieces, nephews, daughters and granddaughters.
Besides his parents, Norman is predeceased by his infant son Toby Andrew, brother Russell and his wife Glenda, half brothers Marvin, Vernal (Tommy) and his wife Eileen and Harold Russell and his wife Bridgett.
We wanted to say a special thank you to Dad’s wonderful neighbors and friends Perry and his wife Sue, and Juan and his wife Liz. Thank you so very much for all of the times that you watched over our Dad and helped him.And he could not have forgiven the omission of his friends at the hunting lodge.
