Paula will always be remembered first and foremost as a devoted and loving mother. Her twin sons, Isaac and Luis, were the center of her world, and her love for them was unwavering and unshakeable. She raised them to be compassionate, curious, and full of life—qualities that reflect the very best of who she was. She was a caring daughter, a loving sister, and someone who could make people feel welcome and understood just by being herself.
Paula was born on October 26th, 1973 in Grant, NE., a place that helped shape the strong-willed, spirited person so many came to know and love. From an early age, Paula had a strong protective instinct for those she loved. A church volunteer recalls how Paula would watch over her baby brother, making sure no one stole his toys.
Paula spent her early years in Grant, attending grade school and junior high school, and graduating from Perkins County High School in 1992. Best friend Jaralyn recalls a fun & adventurous senior prom night, complete with car alarms, and a memorable trip through a fast-food drive thru decked out in full prom splendor.
As relatives gathered to celebrate Paula’s life, a common theme that emerged was that Paula had a gift for keeping people connected. She was the person who reached out, who remembered, who showed up to visit – never letting time or distance quietly turn into separation.
Paula was greatly loved by neighbors and her ‘call every day’ dear friend Tracie, whose son VJ spent so much time with Luis & Isaac that people referred to the group as ‘the triplets’. Tracie’s daughter Vivika considered Paula a second mother. Paula doted on two cats, Czar & Myska, it was a familiar sight to see Paula or the boys walking the cats around the neighborhood on leashes. She was affectionately called ‘Grandma P’, but only by neighbor boys Hector and Victor – anyone else trying to call her that got a serious look.
At the time of her passing, Paula worked for Aon, helping insurance companies understand the impact of cybersecurity risks. Coworkers described her ability to explain very complex scenarios in clear, easy to understand terms to help people make the best decisions.
Out of all the siblings, it was well understood that Paula was the only one who would politely shush noisy people behind her in the movie theatre. Paula fiercely guarded and protected those people close to her. Her presence was a source of comfort and strength, and her loss is unimaginable to all who knew her.
Paula is survived by her twin sons Isaac & Luis, mother Linda, sister Laura, and brothers Justin, Bradley, and Richard. She was also survived by Luis Mendez, ex-
husband, and father of Luis and Isaac. Paula was preceded in death by her brother Kirk.
Memorials are suggested to the family and will be designated at a later date.
