The measure of a man is not his wealth or strength, but how he lived, what he gave, and the kindness, compassion, honesty, and love he shared with family and friends. By this measure, Slater Simon lived a remarkable life.
Slater was born on January 10, 1933, in Denver, Colorado, and peacefully left this world on September 11, 2025, to be reunited with his beloved wife, Shirley.
A proud veteran, Slater served in the Korean War as an Artillery Sergeant, where he witnessed the harsh realities of combat. After returning home, he devoted his life to meaningful work that reflected his values of service, integrity, and care for others.
He held many jobs throughout his life-some out of necessity, but many out of love. Among his most cherished roles were those with the Boy Scouts, where he served as Scoutmaster, Camp Director, and District Executive, shaping the lives of countless young people. Later, he joined the Red Cross as a Disaster Specialist before retiring as a Transportation Manager. His degree in Public Service guided him in these roles, and his compassion for helping others at their most vulnerable was one of his greatest strengths.
Slater was known as a great listener, a natural problem-solver, and a man with a gift for friendship. He loved a good joke, easy conversations, and sharing time with family.
He was married to the love of his life, Shirley, with whom he raised two children, Mark and Julie. Becoming "Papa" to his grandson Joshua brought him great pride, and his joy only grew when Joshua and his partner, Denay Mills, had children, he became "Great Papa" to his great-grandchildren, Finley and Memphis-two little rays of sunshine who lit up his later years.
Slater's life spanned 92 years, during which he witnessed profound changes in the world and left behind a legacy of love, laughter, and service. He was a lifelong Denver Broncos fan and one of the first to purchase season tickets in the 1960s and 70s-football conversations were always among his favorites.
To his family and friends, Slater was more than a presence-he was a source of wisdom, warmth, and comfort. Whether in the room or just a phone call away, he made life brighter for those who knew him.
Slater's life was a testament to kindness, dedication, and love, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
