Velma was born on March 21, 1926 in Herndon, Kansas to Paul John Versch and Agnes Veronica Marie Schmitt Versch. She was the second born of nine children and was the first girl. She was welcomed by her parents and her older brother Paul.
Velma and her older brother Paul were frequently left in charge of taking care of and being responsible for their younger brothers and sisters. They lived several miles away from school, approximately 7 miles. They would stay with their parents on the weekend and help with the chores around the farm. Then on Sunday afternoons they would walk and lead their siblings to their Grandparents house who lived close to the school. On Friday afternoons they would all head back to their parents farm. I believe they both took this quite seriously.
Velma worked as a waitress in Colby, Kansas where she met Alfred James Hunter, whom she later married. Al was an over the road truck driver. Early one morning he stopped by the café for a cup of coffee, where Velma waited on him. After Al left, Velma noticed when clearing the table off that Al had left her a $20.00 tip! Back in those days, that was a fortune! Needless to say, he stopped by that café every time he went through Colby, Kansas.
Velma had five children: Juliette, Linda, Jerry, Laura and Jackie.
Velma loved flowers. She owned and operated her own flower shop Velma's Flowers and Northglenn Florist. Velma competed in the Senior Olympics, where she participated in many different events for several years. She won 22 medals at the Olympics. Velma also received many trophies for bowling.
Velma is survived by her sibllings Shirley Haynes, Fran Versch, Dorothy Hill, and Dennis Versch. She is survived by her children, Juliette Lykens, Laura Cummins and Jackie Townsend. Velma is also survived by her Grandchildren Jim Hunter, Jeff Hunter, Rob Shaffer, Joe Cummins, Matt Cummins, Chris Cummins, Faydra Toth, Rachel Kim, and April Schwimmer.
