Allan Van Hoeter (“Mr. V”) passed away on September 10, 2024 in Tigard, Oregon leaving behind a lifetime of productivity, curiosity and humorous antics. Born January 27, 1937 in Portland, Oregon, Allan attended Kennedy School, then went on to graduate from Jefferson High School in 1955 as a member of the National Honor Society. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Portland State University back in 1960 when it was still known as Portland State College. In 1966 he married Sue Van Hoeter, and they eventually moved from the east side of Portland to spend the next half century in the home he built in southwest Portland. (For the record, Mr. V was about to finish the towel rack in the basement that he began installing in 1969.) Mr. V was an avid bridge player, cribbage cardsharp, Sudoku and crossword puzzler, stamp and coin collector, and frequent urban hiker whose trips to the “PO” and long exploratory excursions always managed to bring him back home in time for dinner.
Mr. V could never sit still, and while that initially got him kicked out of kindergarten, in his adult years that same energy allowed him to work and volunteer in a wide variety of fields for both fun and profit. His official career title was Lead Chemist for DEQ’s Air Quality Department, where he worked from just a few years after college until his retirement three decades later. But other jobs he picked up along the way included restaurant inspector, ambulance driver, UPS delivery agent, USPS mail sorter, Shovel and Rake Gang member, Volkswalk volunteer, Air National Guard baker, Hurricane Mitch relief worker and landlord.
Allan is preceded in death by parents Jack and Mary Van Hoeter and is survived by wife Sue, children Derrick and Renee, grandchildren Abi, Julianna and Tobias, and sister Lorene.
