

Benno Peter Britz was born February 7,1918 in Cold Spring, Minnesota. At the age of two after the death of his mother, he moved with his father, brothers and one sister to Muenster, Saskatchewan, Canada. Benno grew up in Saskatchewan and then moved to Portland in 1940. He married Phoebe Huether in 1942. During World War II he served in the 8th Army Air Corps for three years and was stationed in Watton England for 2 ½ years. After the service he returned to Portland and worked for Safeway and Zenner’s Grocery. In 1956 Benno started the Big B Market. He and Phoebe remained in the grocery business for 27 years. They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on June 29, 2010.
Benno is survived by his wife Phoebe, a daughter Bernadette Britz-Erdmann and son-in-law Stephen Erdmann; two granddaughters, Heather Houck Seethoff (Jon) and Andrea Houck Frascone (Tony); two great-grandsons, Taylor and Cole Frascone. His daughter Elaine died of cancer in 1994 at the age of 40.
There will be a Rosary at Young’s Funeral Home in Tigard at 5:00 pm on Sunday, September 12, 2010 and a Funeral Mass at St. Anthony Catholic Church at 11:00 am on Monday, September 13, 2010. A private interment will follow the Mass at the St. Anthony Church Cemetery.
