Florence Mae Cameron passed away peacefully on April 23, 2020 after a long battle with cancer. She was thankfully surrounded by her family and is finally with her “dear Harold”. True to her tough Scottish roots, she battled longer and harder than anyone ever expected.
Florence was one of 5 children born to Walter and Alvirda Tucker on Tatamagouche Mountain, Nova Scotia in 1935. She followed big brother Bobby and was the oldest of “The Tucker daughters”. In August of 1954, she married the love of her life, Harold Cameron, in Truro, Nova Scotia. They were together for 62 wonderful years until Harold’s passing in September of 2016. Ever the adventurous souls, they left Nova Scotia shortly after their marriage to start building their life in Fairbanks, Alaska. Daughter JoAnne was born during a brief stop in Toronto, Ontario and 3 years later Sheri was born in Fairbanks. While raising a family, Mom found time to sing with the Sweet Adelines, tend to her garden and was an accomplished seamstress. She also worked as a manager for Nordstrom’s and for the State of Alaska. When Harold was transferred to Juneau, Alaska, Mom became quite the fisherwoman. Many happy weekends were spent on their boat fishing for halibut and salmon while watching the dolphins, whales and eagles.
Tiring of the harsh, cold Alaska winters Florence and Harold headed to the “lower 48” in 1986. They made Salem, OR their home base and spent many happy years in their motorhome traveling across the US, Canada and Mexico. Ultimately, the sun and desert beauty of Casa Grande, AZ drew them in. They settled in The Fairways Community and Mom quickly made best friends with.…..everyone! Mom never met a stranger and you were always greeted with a beaming smile and boisterous laugh that would warm your heart. At Fairways she was involved in…..everything! She volunteered for every committee, loved cards, golf, Bingo, dances with Harold, happy hours, potlucks and socializing at the pool. Faith was also a very important part of Mom’s life and she gave tirelessly to the First Presbyterian Church, ultimately serving as a Deacon. Mom loved spending time with her daughter Sheri and her “adopted” daughter Lori at their vacation home in Hood River, OR. Many happy hours were spent on the deck watching the river, planting trees & flowers and spending evenings playing cards.
Mom’s spirit and zest for life will live on in those of us whose lives she touched and she will always be in our hearts. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold, brother Bob and Grandson Greg. She is survived by daughters JoAnne, Sheri and Lori and their families. In addition, she is survived by sisters Tillie, Eleanor and Margie and their extended families, as well as her Fairways family.
The family would like to give a heartfelt Thank You to Mirela and Simon of Autumn Health Care. Their kindness and care were instrumental in helping Mom transition through this difficult journey. Also a special Thank You goes to her nephew Robert who took such great care of Mom during her radiation. We couldn’t have done it without these wonderful people!!
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to the American Cancer Society or to The Seeds of Hope, Casa Grande, AZ, in Florence’s name. A memorial will be planned at a later date.
