Howard was born and raised in California and married his cherished wife Lorraine there. They lived and spent a lot of time in Hawaii but settled in Oregon. They were blessed with five children, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was a proud Korean War veteran, serving first in the National Guard Sunshine Division. His unit was soon inducted into the US Army where he served in the 40th Inf Div Air Section in South Korea.
Howard liked animals, especially dogs and horses, had hidden art talent, and was fun-loving yet hard-working and busy, even as a child. Young at heart, he enjoyed taking family on camping trips and exploring nearly every state in the west. Although he became an award-winning salesman and agricultural educator and even once owned his own lawnmower repair and lawn maintenance business, he was also an excellent manager. He retired as general manager of the Cenex in Tangent, Oregon in the 1990s.
In retirement Howard loved to spend time traveling, fishing and golfing, and became skilled at fixing just about anything, including renovating many of their several homes. Over time, he became a valuable resource for his family, lending advice, telling stories, and teaching them how to repair their own cars and homes.
Howard loved his family and was a good brother, husband, father, uncle, grandpa and neighbor and he made friends everywhere he lived. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved his gentle sense of humor and warm spirit.
The family would like to thank the many friends, neighbors and healthcare and hospice workers who kindly supported our dad, especially over the past few months.
Please feel free to leave a message or memories below for his family.
