John was born in Portland, OR on June 13, 1955, and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in 1973. After years in the grocery business, John fulfilled his longtime goal of obtaining his bachelor's degree. He graduated from Portland State University in 1990 with a degree in Geology, a field in which he worked for the remainder of his career beginning with the U.S. Forest Service before moving on to spend a rewarding career with Parametrix.
In his earlier years, John had a passion for the outdoors, taking frequent backpacking trips, which included hiking portions of the Pacific Crest Trail. He also enjoyed the NW winters as an avid skiier. A lover of sports, John was a fan of the Seattle Mariners, and instilled a love of hockey in his niece and nephew, taking them to countless Portland Winterhawks games during their youth.
John is survived by his loving family: mother Gloria M. Howland, sisters Christine L. Howland and Vicki E. Keast, niece Lauren A. Gregg, and nephew Brian F. Keast.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that remembrances be made to the American Heart Association.
