Monte was Born on January, 08 1926 in Garnett, Kansas to LaMonte Sr. and Mary Dover. He grew up on farms in Kansas, Nebraska, and Idaho, then joined the Army and served bravely, and proudly, in World War II. After the War he moved to Chehalis, Washington and worked at Safeway. In 1950 he transferred to the store in Eugene, Oregon, where he met his future bride. Monte and Mildred (Millie) were married on April 21, 1951, and soon after moved to Portland. He began work at Consolidated Freightways, and settled into Assumption Catholic Church in St. Johns, where their family grew to include 7 children.
In 1981 Monte, Millie, and their last child moved to Southwest Portland and joined St. Clare Catholic Church.
Monte was known for his creativity; he was a great story teller, and he loved hand-crafting anything you can think of. He preferred making something from scratch rather than purchasing. Monte’s legacy will live on in the form of all the hand-made items that he crafted for every one of his children, many of his grandchildren, as well as the Churches he belonged to. For more than 50 years, his relaxation was golf. He was also an avid traveler, with his family, and his bride of almost 59 years. Together they traveled to many foreign countries, and across the USA.
So many aspects of the communities that he lived in were touched in some way by Monte. For example: while PTA President at Assumption Catholic School he initiated the school carnival, which grew into a wider community carnival through the years. Also, at St. Clare’s he was instrumental in either restoring or creating many of the items they currently use to enhance their worship space. After retiring from his 35-year career at Consolidated Freightways, he had more time on his hands for his passions: gardening, golfing, traveling, and wood-working. He always kept himself busy, and if there ever was a need, people could call on Monte to step in to help. He was an usher, greeter, lector, and collection counter for many years at both Assumption and St. Clare.
Monte is survived by his wife Millie, and his 7 children: Diane (Steve) Welters, Danny (his partner Jeff), Debbie Peerenboom, Darrell (Jan), Denise (Dave) Thornton, Doris (Mike) Wilcoxen, Dana (Ben) Galle; 19 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
