She was born in Chehalis, Washington on March 19, 1932 and was one of eight children. She graduated from Centralia High School. She was married to James Holden for a number of years and lived in Burney, California before moving to Medford and subsequently to the Portland area. They had four children (Gary Dean, Carol Ann, David Lee and Sandra Lynn).
For the past 40+ years she has been married to Wayne Hall. Their great love of antiques led them to purchase The Purple Shutters on Sandy Blvd. After several years, they sold that business but still enjoyed collecting their treasured collectibles.
As the children grew older, Marjorie started her search for a career. She began working in clerical positions (Dickinson’s Jams & Jellies, City Center Parking, Byer’s Photo Lab, Mail Me Monday and Wilson’s Photography) but found her niche 40+ years ago in bookkeeping for various grocery stores including several Thriftway locations as well as Zupan’s and Wizer’s in Lake Oswego. Store managers were always impressed with her organization and bookkeeping skills as well as her trustworthiness and dependability. Store personnel appreciated her sense of humor. She loved this work so much that she didn’t retire until she was 82 yrs old.
Marjorie was an excellent cook and truly excelled at it but her true passion was her family. She lived for the holidays when everyone would finally be able to spend time together. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren have especially fond memories of grandma always making sure there were plenty of food and sweet treats on hand whenever they visited. They created a sparkle in her eye that could melt your heart. They were very special to her.
Family also recalls that Marjorie didn’t have a great fondness of animals, but everyone always brought their pets with them when they visited. The grandpets sensed that she was leary of them and always made it a point to sit at her feet and lick her feet/legs whenever possible. She smiled but we knew it was a nervous smile.
Marjorie also had a reputation for being quite the thrifty shopper. She was always in search of a bargain or two and usually found them. She was always well-dressed with shoes to match and no one will forget her beloved purple jacket with the black fake-fur collar trim. She loved it when people stopped her in the store and commented on how pretty it was. It’s memories like this that provide us comfort in our sadness.
Marjorie is survived by her husband Wayne Hall, her children Gary Holden, Carol Crossen (John), David Holden and Sandra Troyer (Dave); 11 grandchildren – Stephanie McMurphy (Brian), Christie Yung, Tom Crossen (preceded in death), Gina Crossen, Michael Yung (Spring), Jeremiah Troyer, McKenna Troyer, Tyler Troyer (preceded in death), Brittany Paulson (Cody), Ryan Holden (Heather) and Jessica Drinkwater (Jeremy), plus 16 great grandchildren.
Someone once called Alzheimer’s The Long Goodbye, and it truly has been just that. At first the changes were subtle and confusing and then progressed to becoming more pronounced and frightening for Marjorie. By the time she passed on, she had forgotten the memories of places she had been, experiences she’d had and the people she loved and who loved her, but we believe that God will relieve her suffering and bring back all those memories so she can have them for all eternity.
