Phyllis Maxine Gerber Self

January 9, 1922 – July 9, 2011

Phyllis Maxine Self, 89, passed away July 9, 2011 at the home of her son, Ken, in Lake Oswego, Oregon where she moved from Boise, Idaho six years ago to be close to her son and his children.

Phyllis was the eldest of four daughters born to Roy and Willa Mina Gerber, born in Twin Falls, Idaho January 9,

1922. Her early years were spent in Twin Falls, Jarbidge, Nevada, Butte, Montana and Buhl, Idaho. Her senior year in high school was in Bellevue where she graduated at age 16. Upon graduation she went to work at Sun Valley when it first opened.

Phyllis married Ken Self of Twin Falls, March 26, 1940. Three children were born of this union, an infant who died shortly after birth, Eilene (1942) and Kenneth (1943). The 17 years of marriage provided many interesting friendships and travel, although the war years were frequently alone as her husband was very active in war work and war commissions on which he served. 1947 took the family to Salt Lake City, Utah for three years returning to Twin Falls in 1950 where she and Ken built their dream home and entered into an active social and volunteer life. In 1957 Phyllis was widowed in the sudden death of her husband and assumed the control of Self Manufacturing Company for several years until selling it when it had be in the family for 50 years. With her children finishing school in the early 1960s and leaving home, Phyllis moved to Boise in 1965 to begin a fulfilling career with Boise-Cascade from which she retired in 1984. Post-retirement years were not idle with Phyllis working for the Idaho legislature when in session for several years.

Phyllis is survived by her son Ken and his two children, Heather and Andrew

(Hanne), both of Portland; sisters Willa Marie of Twin Falls and Shirley Louise of Desert Hot Spring, California; and many nieces and nephews. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Ken, her first child, daughter, Eilene and her youngest sister, Beverley Joy.

Private interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park, Twin Falls at a date to be announced.
