My father, Bernard "Butch" Schwab, wrestled with Ben Petrilli at the University of Virgina. One of Dad's happiest memories was reconnecting with Ben at an honoring of the Wrestling Class of '56, set up by current coach, Steve Garland. I loved watching them reconnect as if no years at all had passed, telling stories & reminiscing about mutual friends, like Kirk McWilliams. All of them shifting & leaning in the stands, when the current team was wrestling. Dad had all good things to say about his wrestling comrade & friend, I wish we had gotten them together, again. Dad's great regard of Ben has caused him to cross my mind, from time to time. I wanted to let him know that Dad passed on May 1, 2025. I see that Ben must already know, and I hope they are catching up and telling those stories, again. Love to the Petrilli families, Carol Schwab Barnett

Mr. Petrilli was more than a  science teacher, he was a great advisor to all of us. His sense of humor and honest responses to us and our progress carried over well into my adulthood, the confidence he built was a powerful influence on my Marine Corps Vietnam experience and later years when I coached young wrestlers. He was one of my favorite teachers and coaches at Mt. St. Joe and I am grateful that he came to that school and shared his talent, drive and enthusiasm with all of us. Prayers for him and his family....

He came along to Mt. St. Joe at a time in my life when I need some discipline, direction, structue, motivation.  He provided all that and a sense that I could do much more if I got it together, got focused and applied myself....not just in wrestling but in anything I did.  He helped me to go on to Loyola U. in Maryland and I am grateful to him and the school for getting me going in my life. I remember him often during the prayers for the dead during mass here in Dallas.  He made a big positive difference in our lives. Amen.....and thank you for being there for us coach Ben......ars

DEAR IDA, I AM SO SORRY TO LEARN OF THE LOSS OF BEN.  DORIS CALLED ME UP TODAY AND TOLD ME.  I WILL KEEP YOU AND YOUR FAMILY IN MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS.  MAY GOD BLESS BEN AND MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE.

Ida, it is Sunday afternoon and I have just learned that Ben died. I am so sorry for your’s and your family’s loss. 
I didn’t know Ben but from reading the messages on line He was a wonderful person- kind and caring. How special that you had the love of such a special soulmate!

Mr. Petrilli was truly an outstanding teacher, coach and role model.  His dedication and caring influenced countless lives of the students of Mt. St. Joe.  Today's world is in dire need of more men like him.

Ben Petrilli was the best coach and mentor.  He never gave up on you and instilled a work ethic that I am sure many of his wrestlers still have. I will never forget how much he helped me.

Very sorry to hear.
Mr. Petrilli was my science teacher at Mt. St. Joseph High School
in early 60s.  He was an excellent teacher and very nice person.


My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Petrelli.  I had Mr. B for freshman science at Mt. St. Joseph.  He was an outstanding teacher and wrestling coach.  May he rest in peace with the Lord.

My Brother Tim Fabiszak and I were neighbors of Ida Barrett and her family for years, and Ben P. was my senior wrestling coach at Mt. St. Joe and began the turn around of that program.  He was a determined, passionate guy about what he was doing and he demanded our best because he had to give that to get to U. VA, and then the teaching/coaching career. When I went back to the Mount to practice wrestling while I was at Loyola U. in Maryland he was always very kind and interested in what I was doing and how it was going. I remember him with great respect, gratitude and will remember him at Mass her in Dallas. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.  

I wish to offer my sympathies to Ida. I am Tim, one of the little boys next door at 12 N.  Potomac St.  Ben & Ida, and all of the Barretts were always nice to my little brother Mark & I.     I and my brother Alex Schilpp, who was coached by Ben, are saddened to hear of the passing of MSJ coach Ben Petrilli.        We have never forgotten the kindness of Ben, Ida, Delores & Francis, and Mr. & Mrs. Frank Barrett.
