Betty Ann Smith slipped away quietly to her heavenly home to be with the Lord on September 28, 2011 . She was the fifth child of seven born on September 17, 1933 to the late Marshall and Margaret Thomas in Monkton, MD. Betty attended school in the “Little School House” near St. Luke United Methodist Church in Hereford, MD and later the Shepherd School in Monkton, MD.
On June 29, 1957, Betty married Joseph Smith and they settled on Cuba Road in Cockeysville, MD to begin their life together; they were married for 54 years. They were blessed with two children: in 1959, their son Tim was born and in 1964, their daughter Tracey was born.
Betty was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Monkton, MD. She believed in the power of prayer and her faith sustained her throughout her illness and her life.
Betty performed domestic work for a number of years for various employers who loved having her feisty and lively personality in their homes. She was an early riser and everything had it’s place in the house and you’d better put things in their proper place or she’d let you know about it. Betty loved cooking, movies, raising and spending time with her children, taking care of her family, reading, family gatherings on holidays, and vacations to the New Jersey shore every summer in August. She was like a second mother to many of her nieces and nephews. She always had an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, and good advice, or a joke. She was a strong Christian woman and remained strong even during her illness.
Betty leaves to mourn: devoted husband, Joseph Smith; dedicated children Joseph (Tim) Smith and daughter, Tracey Ann Franklin; daughter-in-law, Marie-Vic Palu-ay and son-in-law, Joseph (Ja) Franklin; adorable grandsons Timothy Kyle and Austin Jordan; she is survived by her sisters Faustina Jackson and Jane Jones; sister-in-law Kate Smith; and a host a nieces and nephews.
The golden heart of a treasured wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend has stopped beating and her working hands are now at rest. God’s will was quietly spoken and now Betty is at rest with our Heavenly Father. Glory be to God for the allowing us to have her all these years.
