Charlotte Beatrice Watson was born on February 6, 1950, to the union of Ernest and Erma Chapman in Baltimore, Maryland. Charlotte was their first child; however, she had nine siblings: three (3) brothers and six (6) sisters. Charlotte excelled in school. After graduating from senior high school, she earned a bachelor’s degree from Coppin State College in Criminal Justice, graduating magna cum laude. While at Coppin, she was selected to “Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” Charlotte was an overachiever. She also earned another bachelor’s degree from Goucher College and a degree in theology from Saint Mary’s Seminary of Baltimore. In addition to her academic pursuits, she had an entrepreneurial spirit that led her to open a hair salon, which served the public for over twenty (20) years before she transitioned to teaching elementary school-age students.
After graduating from Seminary, Reverend Charlotte Watson became an evangelist at Christian Unity Temple Christian Community Church serving under Pastor Maude H. Coleman. She was on the pulpit alongside Pastor Coleman and Associate Pastor Howard E. Jackson. She served at Christian Unity for several years before joining Saint Phillips Baptist Church where she continued to serve as an associate minister under the servant leadership of Pastor Matthew Riley, Jr. Charlotte met Pastor Riley while she worked as a substitute teacher at Cross Country Elementary School #247 of the Baltimore City Public School System. Because of her excellence as a classroom substitute teacher and ability to positively connect with parents and community, Pastor Riley, who became principal of Cross Country Elementary School, hired her as a full-time teacher. Her students adored her and grew academically because of her effective classroom management skills and instructional excellence.
Reverend Charlotte Watson loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and her beloved Saint Phillips Baptist Church. She was a faithful, dependable, high energy and industrious church member that rose to the occasion whenever called upon. She worked hard using her gifts and talents to advance the kingdom of God and achieve the goals and objectives of Saint Phillips Baptist Church throughout the years until health challenges prevented her from continuing to serve. She taught Sunday School classes, Vacation Bible School classes, classes for special church initiatives, and coordinated ministerial programs and public worship opportunities. Moreover, Reverend Watson had the unique ability to galvanize community resources to develop free food pantries for those needing food.
Charlotte had two children, a daughter who was named after her, Charlotte Chapell Hendricks, and son, Terence Bradley Jones. She was blessed to see both children grow into adults as well as her daughter having children and grandchildren. Charlotte loved being a mom, grandmother and great-grandmother and was just as spry as any of them. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren called her by one name, Granny. She loved cooking, gardening, designing landscapes for her home, and music. Her family was dear to her, and she did not hesitate to sacrifice for them.
Charlotte Beatrice Watson is survived by her son, Terence Bradley Jones, five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren
