I happened upon this memorial site doing a search on the internet for my former classmate Ed Sherer after being away from the DC-Baltimore area for almost 40 years hoping to connect with Ed.  I attended UMBC for three semesters and took dance classes with Ed from Jeff Duncan. My Goucher dance major girlfriend and future wife, Darcie,  and I attended many dance events around Baltimore with Ed.  He also gave me an amazing tour of the neonatal intensive care unit at Hopkins where he worked during his time attending UMBC.  He was a very loving and caring individual with whom I felt a strong connection. I remember his career struggles, love for dance and even driving a gas delivery truck!  I do not know much of his history after I left UMBC, but I always remembered the times we had together and our extended conversations.  My sympathies to all of his family, friends and loved ones at his passing.  

Ed was my cousin-in-love. His Aunt Edie was married to my brother, Spank.  We are close in age so I remember him at Spank & Edie's house when I was growing up.  I remember his handsome face, amazing grin and lively spirit. When we would see each other at family gatherings  Ed was always interested in what I was doing. Though we did not see each other often  I felt a special connection to "Eddie".   Years passed and Helen's Garden was born.  It was such a delight to see Ed & Tom at the restaurant.  I remember Ed's Dad being there at Pajama Sunday Brunches and I loved his Mom's hot milk cake with fudge icing. I last spoke to Ed in May after visiting The Gypsy Queen food truck and taking a tour of the new venue with Tom.  I was so thrilled about the new place and can't wait for it to open.  A few days later I was touched when Ed called me. I loved Eddie.  May his precious & beautiful soul dance into the Light.  May all the Love and Laughter he shared with Tom and his family and friends be a comfort to them.  The Rose Petal story of his neighbors says it all about how much Ed was loved.  What a stunning metaphor for his life: Roses - beautiful, adored by all, a symbol of love & the heart.  I will remember to take time to " smell the roses" in memory of Eddie.

I met Ed during some sort of interview, I suppose when I got the job at Helen's... I have no recollection of that encounter but I have so many memories of the years of friendship that followed... cocktails at the Blue Moon in Rehoboth, dinner parties at the beach house, days at Poodle Beach, listening to radios shows on the floor of the beach house- overlooking the living room, talking about "advanced ballet technique" with Ed and the body woes of being a dancer, connecting our stories in dance his fellow company member was my modern dance teacher, talking to Ed for hours on the phone as I drove from Connecticut to Baltimore, sitting on the front porch of the house in Baltimore theorizing and commenting on the world. Such a wonderful soul and a devoted friend, he was. I feel lucky to have always had both Tom and Ed on my team. 

My family and I have known Ed for a brief time, but even so, we knew that he had a special quality of being able to connect with anyone.  He was welcoming, gracious, and always willing to share his knowledge and stories.  Over the past week, I have learned from his extended family what a wonderful human and great inspiration he was through memories of their time with Ed. His life was fully lived and light was dimmed too early, but his spirit is extended through the many people he gave of himself so generously.  My prayers are for peace and comfort for Tom and family. 

I keep having moments that I don’t believe it’s real. Eddie was such an awesome human. He and Tom are two of the most loving and big hearted people I know. I feel so lucky that I shared an incarnation with him. I have so many wonderful memories with him but one of my favorites was only a few months ago - Tom & Ed were on an evening walk and we ran into each other, as we frequently did, and Eddie got this big smile on his face when he saw me and said “So how are you with your B.A.M.F.S.?” And I just looked at him and smiled - and he said “Do you know what that means?” I replied “Bad A-- M---- F----- Self”. He laughed a great laugh and I think was impressed I got it so quick, lol. That is how I will always remember him. If you were having a tough day - he would lift your spirit with a joke, a story (sometimes a long winded one), a compliment or the best hug. I will miss his hugs. They were so engulfing and genuine. I could on and on about who he was to me and how special he made me feel. I’m sure everyone that he loved could say the same thing. Eddie will live in my heart forever and ever and he better be waiting with those big open arms to greet me when my time comes. We may have lost him physically but we have just gained the best angel looking over us. 

What to say at a time like this?  There are no words to express the sorrow felt for a loss such as this.  I have been a neighbor for 21 years, but sadly I have only come to know Tom & Ed in the last several years.   They always have a hello and a waive when passing by their porch and perhaps a quick story from Ed.  After attending the service, I am sorry that I did not accept invites for a cocktail on the porch or that crab cake, only because I feel as though I have missed out on getting to know the Ed everyone else knows.  Unique is the word I would use to describe Ed.  May you Rest In Peace and know we neighbors will take care of Tom, Leo & Tweed (especially now that I can tell them apart).  Dance for you are now free!

Ed was the kindest person we have ever met.  He and Tom and the Helen's Garden family welcomed us with open arms, and he and the restuarant were a very big part of our move to Baltimore back in 2004.  We became so much more than customers, we became family.  Even if some time went by and we didn't see each other for a bit, we could always pick right up like we had just talked an hour ago.  Our love for Ed will only continue to grow as he will now be watching over us, and guiding us to stay on the correct path.  We love you  Ed, may you rest in peace.

Will miss seeing the two of you together on the porch or walking the dogs, but  every time I see the roses along the block it will bring back fond memories.  Prayers and love.

Ed and Tom together swept me up in their wonderful orbit of friends, dogs, and adventures.  I will always cherish the magical times we spent biking, roller blading, kayaking, and playing in the surf.  Ed’s intelligence and love of fellowship are a great gift he offered up to the universe.  I will always love him.

Dearest Tom,
I cannot tell you how my heart is breaking for your loss. Ed was such a dear man, so brilliant, and his loss will be felt. I cannot make the service on Saturday, but I will be praying for you and Ed and hope you both find peace.

I am imagining Ed on the beach at the Monday afternoon get-togethers, Leo is there too, and Ed on his amazing beach lounger in his little blue Speedo, just holding court in his brilliant way. He will always be remembered with love, and will be missed.

I will always remember Ed's charm, unusual intellect and breadth of knowledge, along with sharing the trials and tribulations of life. I will miss the hugs... May all those who loved him surround Tom and the "boys" with the affection and care we had for Ed.

You truly were a Renaissance man and I will miss your unique well  developed, insightful considerations of local and world politics.  You were able to draw from a font of knowledge that spanned philosophies, disciplines, societies, communities, religions and  sciences.  Your love of friends and family was a shining beacon.  Your generous spirit and mischievous humor livened our days and added joy to the lives of many.  You and Tom were an inspiration to any couple anywhere!  We all want a relationship as solid and loving as the two of you have.   Your willingness to help a neighbor or colleague  in need added many people to your ever widening circle of friends.   Ed, you believed in an afterlife and I picture you very patiently waiting to greet us someday with a great big hug!  Meanwhile, as you wished, we will live our lives to the fullest, rejoice, and remember you with love in our hearts always. I moved into Canton in the late 90’s and became a weekly patron of Helen’s Garden, and, after a few years, a part of the Helen’s Garden “family”.  I’ve never met 2 people so willing to offer their  time, friendship, advice, support,  and, when needed, solace as Ed and Tom.  Ed was there to console me when my boyfriend died suddenly and a few years later when my dad  passed away.   While offering me his sympathy,  he would have me laughing through my tears by the end of the conversation. So, dear Tom,  I remember the pranks the outrageous Halloween’s at Helen’s , the New Years  Eves on the roof with champagne and fireworks, the Sunday brunches and the wonderful people I met at Helen’s,  whether they were customers or employees, because  of you and Ed.   Today I am crying because I just found out, but when I remember Ed, I will smile because I knew him, he touched my life, and we were friends.

My family and I were blessed to meet Ed in 1982 when I was a new nurse in the Hopkins NICU.  I was drawn to his sense of humor, presence, love of the New York Times Sunday Crossword puzzle, brilliant mind, curiosity, ability to stretch his body into positions I didn't think possible (until I learned he was a dancer), and disdain for those who didn't engage in life to the fullest.  Ed was truly a Renaissance man...there was no subject he was deficient in...chemistry, biology, physics, English, literature, history and too many more to list.  One of my fondest memories of our time together in the NICU was Ed leaping into the Garrett Room  with the NY Times crossword and having he, Miss Mary,  a few others and I 'puzzle-ating' between patient care,  combining our collective intelligence to solve the NY puzzle.   A memory beyond description.  My husband, Rick and our kids, Eric and Lauren grew to know and care for Ed as I did.  We were doubly-blessed when we me the love of Ed's live and anchor, Tom.  Over the years, Ed and Tom touched the pinnacle of success at Helen's Garden and faced the devastation and destruction of illness.    Tom, their 'boys' Leo and Tweed, dear friend and Gypsy Queen partner Annmarie, extended family, and friends have lost a kind, gentle, giving, caring and loving soul.   The heavens have gained a bright. shining star to guide the paths of those of us still on this mortal earth.  Dear Ed, please watch over those who have loved you in this life until we meet again in the next.  We hope that you rest in peace,  dear friend.  Sharon & Rick

Whatever path or project that Ed took-on in his life, he did it with more passion and determination than any other person I know. Over the years, I’ve relished our deep conversations and today, I’ve been re-reading our old correspondences. They bring back many happy memories and an account of how extremely intelligent and compassionate Ed was.

There is a new star in the night sky.  Ed was a lovely new friend but I remember his sincerity.  He engaged completely in conversation and I always felt loved when I spoke to him.  His kindness and depth of feeling were unforgettable.
Simply a beautiful soul.  

I met Ed on my first day of work in June 1979 at Johns Hopkins NICU (then called ISCU.)  I was amazed by the young man who balanced on a rolling office chair in order to reach an A/C vent on the ceiling to adjust (increase, of course!) the air flow with a letter opener. What a mechanic! Over the years I learned that Ed was also so many other things:  modern dancer, scientist, comedian, home improvement expert, bicyclist, roller blader, kayaker, businessman, the man who gave me away at my wedding, etc.  I cherish our friendship and the support I always received from him.  When  dear Tom  came into his life (and mine) we joked about having 200% fun.  I will miss Ed on this earthly plane but I know that there is a now a new, very special star in the heavens.  

How i will never forget our phone chats.  Memory Eternal 

Ed was one of the first people I met when I moved to Baltimore 17 years ago. His brilliantly weird brain drew me in and made me feel right at home. The family he and Tom created at Helen's Garden are still my dearest family of choice. His ability to engage just about every type of person and make them feel important was unparalleled. He will be sorely missed. Sending love to you Ed. I hope you have found the peace you couldn't find here. And to Tom and the boys, well, I send a wish for peace for you, too; as well as all the ham you can get your hands on.  My most sincere condolences and love to you, forever and ever. 

Remembering laughter, warmth, gift of gab, intensity, powerful intellect and wit... charisma of rare enormity. Heart to match.
I encountered this force that is Ed, as a fellow sufferer during bleak part of the journey. What a bright light.

I have so much to say. From the minute I met Ed while having lunch at Helen's Garden, I was fortunate enough to get to know him and Tom. Over the years, Ed and Tom have done so much for me...from hosting my real estate dinners to my bridal shower and so much in between. I remember when I introduced Ed to my husband   when we got engaged and he was so excited and happy for me. We always kept in touch and I will miss him. I am thankful I knew him. Hugs. 

I visited Ed and Tom way back when. This breaks my heart. He was one of the best people I have ever met. We have truly lost a wonderful soul. Goodbye Ed, I love you....

I spoke on the ph with Ed for about an hour a few years ago.We were fb friends. He reached out to me.....just a beautiful sunny day. I remember where I was.....in 2012. What a lovely human being....intelligent with a caring heart. Wanting the best for everyone.....and sharing so deeply with a virtual stranger...we shared some of our struggles. RIP Ed
