

He was the loving husband of the late Shirley Anne Steel, with whom he shared many cherished years. Henry was a devoted father to Dr. Chip Steel and his wife, Dr. Linda Steel. He was also a dear and close friend to Kenneth Buck, Jr.
His role as a grandfather was one he treasured deeply, and he will be fondly remembered by his grandsons, Alex Steel and Nick Steel.
Born in Longbranch, NJ, Hank was the older brother of Russell M. Steel, Jr. and his wife Judy. He was a beloved uncle to Alison Freudenberg, Kathy Komerska, Bobby Jones, Dr. Hugh Preas, James Preas and Harry Steele. Hank was also close to Linda’s sister, Carol Henry and her family.
Hank proudly served his country as a Navy veteran during the Korean Conflict, where he was stationed on the Battleship New Jersey as an Electronics Technician, rising during service to the rank of First Class Petty Officer (ET-1).
After the Navy, Hank completed his Degree in Electrical Engineering at Lafayette College. After working for Jersey Central Power and Light as a Field Engineer, Hank and Shirley moved to Maryland where he started as a Design Engineer for Westinghouse Electric in Defense Systems and Logistics. Ultimately, he became an executive at Westinghouse, as Engineering Supervisor and Engineering Department Manager. He earned a Masters Degree in Personnel Administration from George Washington University. Hank retired in 1994 and focused his time on family, friends and hobbies that included sailing and power boats, his 1949 Ford that he showed at events as well as travel and fitness with Shirley.
In his later years, he and Shirley moved to Mercy Ridge Retirement Community, where he was active in activities including the Chorus and weekly Church Services. Hank and Shirley enjoyed many holiday, school and athletic events with their grandchildren, other family members and close friends throughout
the years.
Hank was blessed with 64 years of a loving marriage with Shirley until her passing in 2021. He lived at Brightview Perry Hall during his final year, where he made numerous friends, participated in events and received wonderful care until his passing. He had a very full life, impacted the lives of many others and will be remembered for his energetic spirit.
