Jim was my great grandfather he was a good man and before I was born he wished every day for me to exist and I you want to know who I am my name is James O’conor Gentry IV his great grandson 

My sincere condolences to Jim’s family.  He was a treasured friend of my mother, Joan Daniels Eckhart, and all who knew him at Mercy Ridge.  I was a great gift and privilege for me to have spent time with him there over the last decade.

“Mr. Gentry” has a special place in the storybook of the Daniels family because he would make the Sign of the Cross whenever my grandfather’s name was mentioned!  As the story goes, my grandfather, Dr.  Thomas F. Daniels, was pediatrician to Jim’s kids and once stayed at the Gentry home through the  night to watch over a one of the young children who had a high fever so that the parents could get some sleep.  Jim subsequently referrred to my granddaddy as a saint, hence the holy gesture.  I was always so grateful to Jim for the gift of that story. He was generous that way.

The choir of angels surely greeted Jim, and he’s now with the beloved who have gone before. I’m so grateful to have known him.  


Jim - thanks for getting me back on the Bay.  Your gift of sailing and sharing some great trips to Still Pond, rekindle my love being on the water.   When your sailboat finally left Bowleys Quarters for the west coast,  I set up a new launch slip at Young’s Boatyard in North Point.

My deepest sympathy to all of you on the loss of your Dad.  Jimmy Gentry was always “kind” and “thoughtful” to me no matter my circumstances.  What a good man and father!  I will miss him.

May he rest in peace.

I remember Mr. Gentry very well from my high school years. He was definitely a "people person" and he always made time to talk to Lacy's friends. And he was interested in so many things. It was fun as a teenager to interact with an adult who didn't talk down to you! My deepest sympathy to all the family - I know you have many great memories that will bring you comfort at this sad time. A life well lived - may he rest in peace.


Today's funeral Mass was a lovely tribute to your Dad. He was blessed to have experienced such a full and rich life and to be the recipient of so much love, especially from all of you. I am truly sorry for this significant loss. 
I feel fortunate to have known "Mr. Gentry," starting with the early days on Kitmore Road, though I never entirely forgave him for moving you guys out of the neighborhood. He and my father had a special relationship. And, as others said today, he was a generous and loyal friend. 
I hope you find peace in the coming days, are able to comfort one another and continue to feel your Dad's presence in your lives.



My condolences to the Gentry family. He will be missed by so many.  I’m so glad he was with you all for this last year. Family meant so much to him. 
I am so grateful for his friendship and the times we spent together- sailing, skiing, playing tennis, attending meetings, and getting his sage legal advice. 
Today’s service  was a touching tribute - beautifully directed by him! 

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Gentry family. 
Jim's death leaves such a hole in your heart, and MY heart goes out to you. Jim epitomized generosity and service, and it was evident that he passed this legacy on to his children and grandchildren. I loved his gentleness and that twinkle that was so often in his eyes. I- as well as so many other SSND's and members of the IND community- will be forever grateful to Jim for his faithful and generous service as well as his wisdom that he shared with us. "Go now in peace, faithful friend of God." I will miss seeing you at the Donor Mass and Good Friday services, for sure!


Dear Jim was a source of tremendous joy comfort and support to me for the last 25 years. He gave me great strength when I needed it and carried me through a difficult time. He would poo poo it but I consider him a savior.
His time given so generously and completely without judgement was only one of his many attributes. He will always have a place in my heart.

Sending condolences to all of the Gentry family.  I happened to be in Baltimore for the celebration of your father’s 90th birthday and was graciously included in that momentous event.  He seemed so proud and happy to be with his large loving family.  May you have many wonderful memories of him and the time you spent together.

My family and I enjoyed watching a couple Raven’s games over the years and having Thanksgiving dinner in 2019 with Jim at Tom and Judy’s house. He always had a witty and seasoned comment to add to a conversation! Will miss not seeing him again. To the whole Gentry clan, we share share in your sadness as you remember him.

To all of Jim’s family, Bob McGraw and I have so many wonderful memories of Jim!  Many, many great and fun times  we were delighted to share and memories we will cherish.

I have such fond memories of  working with Jim. Back in the  early  1980's, on behalf of Monumental Insurance Co,  Jim was incredibly helpful in starting a new public-private partnership to revitalize Charles St. The organization we started, along  with the support of Mayor Schaefer,  was the precurser to Downtown Partnership.  Jim led the way by example  in building strong business support  for the effort, convincing other business leaders to provide their  support too for downtown revitalization.  Jim  was  always so upbeat and  positive, always with a chuckle and some inspiration  to keep moving forward. He   spoke about his children with such pride,   as he regularly brought me up to date on their  interests and activities.  The city is a  better place thanks to Jim's tireless work.   Laurie

I am so sorry for your loss. I never had the good fortune to meet your father, but I am sure he must have been so proud of the two of you.

Jim Gentry was a prince of a man.  We interacted many times during his and my long life.  Doris Ann Gentry, his sister, was a good friend of mine, and played an important role in the creation of Caroline Center. Jim was always ready to help, no matter what one asked of him.  He has left a large, loving family to carry on his penchant for loving, giving, and serving.

I feel sure that he will still bless his family and friends from  the heights of new creation that he has entered.

Jim was great friend and inspiration. We shared weekday morning fellowship for many years. I have two of his wonderful nature paintings hanging in my home and especially cherish the time I got to ride with him on his sailboat up the Chester River. He was a fantastic, loyal, thoughtful  guy.
