Judy once lived in Columbia, South Carolina.  I knew Judy pretty well as a fellow trainer, and academic, at the University.  Here is an abbreviated version of what I shared with the Greater Columbia Obedience Club, of which Judy was a member.

Dear GCOC fellow members:

Like many of Judy's friends and acquaintances, I was shocked to hear about Judy Shinogle's death last weekend.  I have been haunted by the news that came to us from the GCOC mailing list last Monday.  

While there are many new members in GCOC who never knew Judy, there are many of us who remember her well.

Judy came to Columbia as an Assistant Professor at USC School of Public Health in the early 1990s.  She found GCOC quite quickly when Bruni was just a tyke, I am happy to say.   It was clear to all of us early on that Judy was a total natural as a dog trainer.  I think, but am not sure, that she showed Bruni in one of our trials in Novice obedience.  I am not sure how she did, or if she even ever finished an obedience  title.  No matter.  Judy's first love, as it became clear soon, was in the field and agility.  

From what I understand, Judy was at the prime of her academic career when she left this life.  She departed Columbia to take a prestigious fellowship at one of the National Health Institutes in DC, and went on to become an Associate Professor at both University of Maryland Baltimore and University of Maryland College Park.  She was well-respected in her field of public health.  

As a dog trainer, she was probably the best handler a dog could want.  She was exuberant, loving, and exhilarating to her dogs.  Not to mention the rest of us!  Judy was a bit bigger than life, you just couldn't help but love her.

In closing,  many of us know what it is like to get up in the wee hours of the morning, load our pups into the car, and head off to a trial before dawn.  

Let us remember Judy, and for her sake if nothing else, be careful.  We cannot afford to lose any more of our community.

I think I first met Judy, many years ago, when I kicked her out of my chair at an agility trial. As an eternal chair hopper, that was of no concern to her...she just moved over and you were a new friend drawn into her conversation. How could you not be? She was the eptiome of "joie de vive". The agility community will miss you, Judy and Bruni. We are all better people for having known you. Keep our seats warm in heaven.

Judy will be missed by lots of people in the business and research community.  My colleagues and I recently completed a research project with her.  She was a joy to work with, and we all learned lots from her.  She touched so many lives in a positive way through her research on health and social issues.  We will miss Judy.

Utter disbelief was my first reaction at the news of her loss.  Judy was so well-loved among all of us agility people, how could this be.   I didn't get to know her that well but I knew she worked at UMBC which is also my alma mater, so I felt connected in that way.   She was an amazing person and a great agility handler.   We will miss you, Judy and Bruni.

I didn't know Judy well, but loved watching her run her dogs at agility trials.  She was just one of those people you're drawn to.  My thoughts are with her family and the many loved ones she left behind.

I loved watching Judy run Bruni and Seiggy and enjoyed her company ringside.  She was so much fun.  I'll miss seeing her and glad I had a chance to know her.  Condolances to her family.

What a joy it was to know Judy!  Despite our sorrow, I take comfort in remembering how she brightened every trial she attended with her vibrant personality.  I'll carry her in my heart each time I walk a course, call my dogs off obstacles and tell them how wonderful they are at the end of the run.  Thanks, Judy, for showing us the way to live.

My prayers and thoughts are with Judy and Bruni and with those she left behind.  She was a brilliant, vibrant warm and supportive person who touched many lives and she will be sorely missed.  God bless everyone in this time of sorrow.

My sincerest sympathies go out to Judy's family & friends. I am an agility person also and while I didn't know Judy personally, I'm sure we were at trials at some point at the same time. This is such a sad time and my heart goes out to you.

I will always remember Judy, Seiggy and Bruni as devoted, fun loving, agility partners. On Saturday I crated next to Judy. What is etched in my mind is Judy hugging both of her dogs and rough housing with them before they went to the ring to compete that afternoon. Truely three best friends. She will surely be in the thoughts and prayers of the members of the agility community as we compete and honor her memory.

Judy's untimely and unexplained death has really shaken the agility community.  Our heartfelt sympathies go out to her family and loved ones.  She will be SO MISSED by many of us.  She was always smiling, joking and enjoying her life.  She no doubt did more with her life in the short time she was on earth than many.  Judy, we'll all miss you more than you know. You made a profound impression on us.

My deepest condolences to all of Judy's friends and families.  She touched all of us in ways she probably never knew.  Her larger-than-life spirit will live on in our hearts and memories.  May her and Bruni both RIP.

I miss my friend; will forever.  My sympathy goes out to Jim and her family.  She was just one of the best.  When I think of different times spent with Judy, I still just crack up.

My thoughts and prayers are with Judy, Bruni, her family and friends. The love she had for life, will be celebrated everytime a team steps onto the agilty field. We miss you both.

My very deepest sympathies to Judy's family and her family of friends.  She was joyful and brought joy every day.  I will miss my friend.

I will miss Judy on the Agility fields. She was a fun and skilled handler. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

My heartfelt condolences to the many grieving loved ones that Judy leaves behind.  Her kind, generous, gregarious, spirit will live on in my memories.  I love and miss you, Judy.

My deepest sympathies to Jim and the Shinogle family. Judy will be missed by all the many friends and family she touched and cherished.  Our hearts are broken but Judy's spirit will live on forever.  RIP my dear friend.
