I am devastated by this news. Peter was a great help to me for the last ten years. He would work on and off helping me in my yard and garden. He was always so friendly, engaging and personable. Just this week, I was thinking that he would make a great interviewer or radio personality. What a great smile! He had so many admirable qualities and was of exceptional character.  He always spoke lovingly and  with pride  of his father, mother and sister. He was a good man. I will miss  him. 

Peter and I had many good times in high school. Peter was very easy going, laid back and was friendly with everyone. It was always a bummer when baseball season came around in that Peter couldn’t hang out as much. I’m happy that he got to meet my wife. I will most definitely miss Peter. I would have been at the service if I had know. My deepest condolences to his sister and parents.

Dear Gary, Sheila, and Mo,
I am not certain what more we can add to what has already been said about Peter.  He was fun to drive with from baseball park to baseball park and a great athlete at that!  Listening to Mo give her eulogy and seeing all the old pictures of Peter brought back wonderful memories for Peggy and me.  I had to laugh when Mo talked about going to the baseball games.  Caitlin was in the same boat as Mo, but I do not think she enjoyed it as much as Mo did.  Conor was lucky he never had to be dragged to any of Caitlin’s swim meets.   Both Mo and Caitlin were real troopers going to all those games.  I’m not certain if it’s our age now or not, but I know for Peggy and I looking back at those days when the kids were going through TRC Rec and all the way through THS, they were the best.  Peter was a big part of those days and the joy he brought to our family will never be forgotten.  Peter will forever be in our memories and prayers along with you all.

So many great memories from the kitchen of the Country Club of Maryland, the golf course of the Country Club of Maryland, watching our friend play with his band at zen west, riding bikes on the NCR trail, to helping you move, and best of all M&T bank stadium when when we watched the Ravens beat the Colts in overtime . All memories I will forever cherish. Until we meet again my friend.

We were deeply saddened to hear of Peter's passing, and offer our heart-felt condolences to you. The touching and beautiful characterizations of Peter on this site gave us a sense of what a loving, strong, kind, loyal and fun young man he was. We wish we had known him. I was deeply saddened to hear of Peter’s passing and in recent days, many fond memories have stood out. I remember when we became friends on the first day of 1st grade, bonding over a shared name that would leave our teacher with the difficult task of calling between us and eventually naming us Peter D and Peter S while seating us on opposite sides of the class. I remember when Peter encouraged me to try out for his travel baseball team in 5th grade so that we could finally be teammates, which we’d remain through all of high school. In baseball, no matter which position he played, he was the best at it and made it look easy, yet he’d also finish every game with the dirtiest uniform, which was a signature of his effort and passion. I remember admiring that no matter how tough he was on himself during games, he’d be nothing but supportive to his teammates and despite a win or loss, he’d be excited to greet any family in attendance after with his smile and sense of humor. In sandlot games at Stoneleigh lower, I remember how he’d barehand any pitch he didn’t like, instead of letting it hit the backstop, to avoid wasting time. When we’d play against the older guys (everyone of them like an older brother to Peter), they’d wisely bribe him to play on their side. On days when we couldn’t field a full game and settled for infield/outfield practice, I remember how excited we’d get for his turn to hit fly balls because he could put the ball anywhere he wanted and seemingly never get tired. Outside of baseball, there was also no one better than Peter to crack jokes with in someone’s basement or grab a soda with at Uncle Wiggly’s. During run ins after HS, I remember how Peter would always ask how my parents were doing before anything else. It’s no coincidence that any close friend of Peter’s knows that he was loved not just by his friends, but by his friends’ parents, siblings and pets alike. He was a caring, loyal friend and will be deeply missed.

Peter was an integral part of the fabric of the 800 block of Wellington Road.  We have had the privilege of raising our families with several others on our part of the street that quickly became our Stoneleigh family and the Sunderlands were certainly a part of that.  We got to watch each other’s children grow and blossom into who they were meant to be through playing in the court, or at the pool, or during carpools to Beachmont Camp in the summer with the neighborhood gang. When we think of Peter, we think of the saying, “if you can’t run with the big dogs, stay on the porch.” Suffice it to say, Peter was NEVER on the porch.  He could integrate, participate, and compete with any kid in the neighborhood and do so in a spirit of fun and friendship.  
And then, as a young man, we got to reconnect with Peter at the Country Club of Maryland where he would always make the effort to chat with us, asking about our lives, our kids’ lives — always warm and others-centered.  We will miss him dearly as will all who ever had the chance to encounter him.

We had the pleasure to move next door to Gary, Sheila, Peter and Mo in the summer of 2009. I think Peter had just graduated from THS and Mo was still in school. We usually saw Peter coming to and from with his car parked out front, always gave a wave, kind hello or a "hey". Our son Theo remembered being given one of Peter's first skateboards, he asked me if we should return it to Gary and Sheila.  I wish we had known him more, but were fortunate to get to know our funny and smiling friends and forever neighbor with Gary and Sheila. We send our deepest sympathies and love. Pete was always a good friend, always down to play basketball and go to Commons. A great mind for sports, I enjoyed texting him about the Ravens this year and our shared opinion of the cornerback situation. I am going to miss him.

We are celebrating Peter’s life in our family as we share fun memories of Peter and the rest of the gang growing up and playing on Wellington Court. Peter lived directly across from the Court and was always a part of the action. He was fearless in his play, and we could tell he would be an athlete!  We are so saddened by this news, and our hearts break for you Sheila, Gary and Mo.  We send you hugs and love, and wish you peace in the days to come.  Julie & Terry

Gary, Sheila and Mo:  your sudden loss leaves us without words.  We did not know Peter well but when we think of him, we remember a big smile with deep dimples in his cheeks.  Our only comfort in life and death is we are not our own but belong body and soul to our faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.  Pray you find peace in Christ alone.  We would so like to be there with you.  


I first met Pete when I was 10 at a travel baseball tryout for the soon to be famous Towson Tornados. The team had played together before, and I was a bit of a new kid, only knowing a couple others from another league. Peter was the first to welcome me, made me feel like I was welcome, then proceeded to hit a shot off me pitching and put me in my place. He had a way with that strategy, joking and light hearted, then competitive and dominant. I loved that mentality and thrived off of it, as he was my catcher for my entire pitching career. We even won the Regional Championship as high school seniors which is a memory I’ll never forget. Our chemistry was unmatched, and he just knew how to help me pitch well though little cues only time could pick up. His mound talks were like a Hemingway piece, short and to the point with no fluff. Can’t find the plate? Focus on my glove. Bases loaded? They can’t go anywhere if you strike him out. I take these simple remarks as metaphors in life and remind myself when things gets tough. Pete always knew how to set me at ease, but then again, he did it to everyone he met. From backyard, to travel, to summer ball, to high school ball, I always had Sundy to keep me straight on the mound, and I’ll never forget the memories we had in the dugout, on the field, and in the neighborhood.  My first memory of “Sundy” was walking into 6am pitchers and catchers practice at Towson High. For those who remember, the before school work outs were always dreaded, even as pitchers who just got to throw. For catchers you have to sit there, before school, and catch a rotation of players trying to prove themselves. This led to alot of baseballs bouncing off the wood floor. I vividly remember Peter taking a poorly thrown ball right to the shin, no padding, no nothing. A shot that likely would have sent regular people to the side to lick their wounds. Not Peter though, he didn’t flinch and proceeded to throw the ball harder back to the pitcher than the pitcher could dream of. Something that was common with him, especially if you weren’t throwing strikes. Peter was tough as nails.
Peter was also one of the most welcoming people you could meet. A laid back attitude and someone who was willing to be friends with anyone. For a period of time in 2009 Peter and a group of us would play basketball virtually every chance we got (Brickma, Eric, Judd, Conor, Len, Aaron, etc) Peter was always one of the best trash talkers. The kind of trash talk that would make you laugh at yourself and laugh with everyone. 
My deepest condolences to the family and all of those who cared for Peter.  I’ll always cherish his mound visits when I was pitching. Short and sweet “just throw strikes”. I may be leaving out a few expletives . 

It’s with heavy hearts that we reflect on Peter’s untimely death and his impact on our lives. Growing up we both had one sister each, but on Wellington Court we were blessed with countless brothers. Among them, Peter stands out in our memory as a gifted athlete; tireless and tough. A de facto little brother; determined, eager and joyous. But most importantly as a friend. Our hearts mourn his loss and overflow with fond memories of the countless hours spent playing together. Peter will hold a special place in our hearts forever.

I did not have much direct contact with Peter.  But his mother and I spoke of him fairly often and I remember when he was born. Such a gift to his parents who dearly wanted children and who were elated when he was born.   He was a kind, gentle young man.  He will be sorely missed. 

Peter is my best buddy. My prayers and thoughts are with the Sunderland family. He will be missed dearly. 

Peter was one of my first friends I ever made. He was also one of my best.  He could make friends with anyone. I remember thinking it was so cool that Peter could hang out with the older kids on the block and they actually wanted to. He was not afraid to speak his mind and was one of the toughest people I have ever met. When we played football up at Stoneleigh, he was always the one you wanted on your team because he had a rocket arm and was the best tackler, being able to take down even the older kids. We both played catcher in baseball and even though he was much better than me, he always encouraged me and helped me out. He was kind, caring, and had a great sense of humor. There are too many inside jokes to list but I will cherish them forever. Over the years, whenever my family was at the Country Club, he would always go out of his way to come out of the kitchen and have a great conversation to see how we all were doing. I am sending all my love to the Sunderland family. Peter was an amazing person that I am very honored to be able to call my friend. You will be missed

I have never known such a positive, easy-going individual as Peter. He frequented our home nearly every day as kids with the energy and joy of the summer sun in tow. No one could keep Peter down, literally or figuratively. He was a tough cookie and loved to hang with kids of all ages, even twice his age and size. His ability to pinball throughout the community, weaved a connective fabric that tied us all closer. I am often reminded of this behavior and the value of connecting with all “neighbors”. I will not soon forget the snowball fights, epic sled jumps on the country club golf course, late night Super Nintendo, night games in the Wellington court, battle royale in the backyard, or B.P./F.P. on the lower Stoneleigh baseball field with the whole Stoneleigh gang. Peter you are loved and will be greatly missed. All my love to the whole Sunderland fam.

It is hard to put into words our shock and sadness to hear of Peter’s passing.  Although we didn’t have the pleasure of being close with Peter in his post high school years we remember him fondly as a easygoing guy and a great ball player.   Please know that we are thinking of you, Gary, Sheila and Mo and sending you warmth and love.

Peter was my best friend when I was kid and he was a fixture in our family home even adopting his own Wetherington name - Carlos (credit my dad!). I loved Peter like a brother. We spent countless summer days playing toy soldiers in his front yard underneath the big pine tree, hide and go seek, water gun fights, making dams in the streams at Beachmont camp, pool games like sharks and minnows or simply catch with a football or baseball - Peter had a cannon for a right arm even then and was formidable in any and all throwing activities. As for summer nights, the only question was which house were we sleeping over at, his or mine. Rarely sleeping, instead we spent most the night talking about our aspirations for the future and hanging out in either his or my bunkbed or in sleeping bags crawling on the floor playing with teenage mutant ninja turtles action figures. Being 1.5yrs older than me I looked up to Peter and he has certainly shaped the man I am today. He was a friend to all kids in the neighborhood no matter the age difference, older kids respected him and younger ones admired him and felt welcomed in his company. He had that rare combination of being tough as nails yet still sentimental and affectionate. He was a true gentleman with parents and the elderly and they adored him. He was the hardest working kid on the block; come spring and summer with lawn mowing, fall with leaf raking or winter with snow shoveling, Peter was out and about in the neighborhood and often doing it simply out of the kindness of his heart. Peter was a joy to be around and getting a laugh out of him was somehow both easy and infinitely rewarding - I can hear his laugh right now and it is still infectious. He was often the center of attention without trying because he was so easygoing, charismatic and loving. Simply put, Peter was the best of us and brought out the best in us. I will miss him dearly and cherish the memories we made together for the rest of my life.

I cannot bring myself to conceive your loss but do be assured that you are much loved.

The picture in my mind right now is Peter (as catcher) making a long, hard, and accurate throw to second base for a crucial OUT. I saw him play many times and he was always a key player who was fun to watch on the field, at bat, and on the sidelines.

I also remember another time when he and I were “stuck” and laughing on our steps while balancing a six foot long piece of very heavy and unwieldy bedroom furniture. We survived the ordeal and we laughed until we cried.

When Peter was in elementary school, Sheila and I would take turns walking our kids back and forth to school.  At that time , our youngest, Travis was an infant and would accompany our small caravan on our walks, Peter, a kindergartener , would almost always greet baby Travis with a warm kiss to his forehead.  I was so touched by Peter's young, impulsive affection for Travis .  Such warmth  has been felt by so many of us throughout Peter's life!

When Gary let me sit on the bench of Peter and Chip’s travel baseball games, Peter was always the most engaging with me, like a second big brother on the team. He cracked the team up with jokes punctuated by sunflower seed shells, and his competitiveness kept the fire on the team going. It was a joy running into him at the pool or an orioles game when I would always be greeted with a “SCOOOOOOOT!” And he always made me feel like part of the group despite being 5 years younger. Peter played a huge part in my childhood memories and will always be remembered as such.
