A memorial service will be held to celebrate Richard’s life at his church, Trinity Episcopal, 120 Allegheny Ave., Towson, Maryland on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at 11 AM.
Born in Baltimore, Richard Chapline grew up in Baltimore County. He was a proud 13th generation Marylander and a direct descendant of Mary Calvert Chapline, sister of the first Lord Baltimore and an early settler in Jamestown, Virginia. Family members had owned one of the first farms in Jamestown, Chapline's Choice.
Rick was active at the Oregon Ridge Nature Center in the nineties and was known in the Lutherville Timonium area for his involvement and coaching in youth sports. He enjoyed canoeing, backpacking and exploring the wilderness. Later in life, he found the biggest joy in spending time with his family, cooking and immersing himself in the culture and history of small towns across America.
For nearly twenty years, he was a postal worker at the Phoenix Post Office, retiring in 2018. He was beloved on his route and became lifelong friends with many. He was known for answering children’s Santa letters with hand written personalized responses at Christmas. Prior to that, he owned and operated Metro News sites in the Baltimore subway with his late father and best friend, Edward I. Chapline.
He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Joanne Chapline; son Joseph Chapline and his fiancée Meghan O’Brien, daughter Indianna Cutrell and her husband Zachary Cutrell; granddaughters Sloane and Emilia Cutrell; and his sister Nora Fritzges. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Mary Regina Chapline; and two sisters Judy Chapline and Kathleen Ramirez.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be directed in Rick’s memory to Oregon Ridge Nature Center, 13555 Beaver Dam Road, Cockeysville, MD 21030.
