I am remembering the life of Dr. William Reichel today. His kindness in donating books and medical journals to improve our medical library and for his continued friendship throughout the years. I am hoping Helen and family are doing well. Dr. Reichel will always be remembered.

Dr, Reichel was a mentor when I was a nurse manager at the Family Practice Center in the 1980’s.  He left an indelible place in my heart both professionally and personally.  
     I first met him when I was looking for a student summer job at the Geriatric center in Baltimore.  I sneaked into the building after being told there were no summer jobs.  I explored the building, sure I would stumble across a tip for a job, and was discovered by Dr. Reichel.  He took the time to talk to me and then to write to the American Heart Association for a grant for a summer job.  It didn’t pan out,  but I remembered that kind and generous act.   Many years later, I was a nurse in the ER at Franklin Square, and ran into him.  He remembered me, and when I applied to be a nurse manager, I know he was the major influence in getting the job.  It was in his Family Practice Program!   
      He taught me life lessons of caring, and believing in possibilities!   I think he was a major influence on my success in life!   He had a way of making things happen, and it is a part of my fabric to this day.   I have thought of him so many times!   In am so very grateful for having known this truly great man!

Dr. Reichel was a kind, gentle person who will always be remebered. His love for books and medicsl journals was an inspiration. He donated so many periodicals to our library collection at Memorial Hospital, Pawtucket which were so needed. I will always be grateful for his generosity. We stayed in touch over the years and I feel great pride in having had the opportunity to know Dr. Reichel and to have worked with him to improve our collection. I met Bill many years ago at Memorial Hospital, Pawtucket where he was precepting. He became a donor to our library collection even long after he left the area.Bill was a wonderful doctor and even more a wonderful person. We stayed in touch over the years through email and occasional phone calls. Bill has contributed so much in the field of geriatrics and I am so looking forward to the publishing of his 8th edition. May beautiful memories always fill your heart.


He was a wonderful man.  I remember meeting him from time to time at Franklin Square Hospital.  Everyone spoke so highly of him.  He was kind and unforgettable.

Dr. Bill Reichel was a giant among physicians.  With his calm, kind and gentle character, his leadership and determination were formative in creating American Geriatric Medicine, Post-acute and LTC Medicine, Nursing Facility Medical Direction, and Family Medicine as medical focus areas & specialties.

Dr.  Reichel was a mentor for so many of us - supportive, encouraging, guiding and challenging us to make a better world for our patients and their families/caregivers. 

Dr Reichel loved to tell the story of how Dr. Chris Durso was an internist in private practice, but decided to interview for a job as a CCRC medical director with a faculty position within the Division of Geriatric Medicine at Hopkins. In preparation for his interview with Dr. John Burton, Dr.  Durso purchased a copy of "Reichel's Care of the Elderly" and read it cover to cover.  Dr. Durso told Dr. Reichel how he became intrigued by the intricacies of geriatric medicine, outlined in the text book. The rest is history.  Dr. Durso took the job, eventually became  Director of the Division of Geriatric Medicine at Hopkins and then continued to rise within the academic ranks at Hopkins.  This is just one example of how Dr.  Reichel touched so many lives..........

I worked with him for 13 years at FSHC.  H was my mother's doctor also.                                                                                                                                                He was a patient and loyal friend.  I will truely miss him

I was a graduate nurse in 1970 and worked at the then- newly relocated Franklin Square Hospital. The hospital was previously located in downtown Baltimore and had opened a 300-bed facility in Rossville Maryland. Dr Reichel was the Chief of Medicine at the hospital and made rounds daily in the ICU where I worked. His calm competence offered support and encouragement to me who was new to the field. I myself eventually moved to geriatrics and was delighted to become reacquainted with Dr. Reichel through his textbook many years later . I knew him as a kind man who clearly made significant contributions to  the practice of medicine.

Dr. William Reichel was the chairman of Family Medicine at Franklin Square Hospital when I started as a resident in 1981.  He started a nationally recognized residency program that now has grown to  more than 20 faculty physicians and educated hundreds of residents and medical students. Dr. Reichel embodied the true meaning of being a physician, from compassionate and meticulous  care of his patients to his editorial skills as an educator.  He was an example to us all.  Dr. Reichel has been a mentor and friend  to me over the past 40 years and will be deeply missed. 

Bill Reichel was one of my first professional acquaintences when I started as a physician in long-term care in 1978, which I have continued for 43 subsequent years. He helped mentor me in those early days. I admired him for his pioneering work in geriatrics and geriatrics education as well as his wisdom generally. He helped establish a high standard for practice and training. His death is a great loss for the care of the elderly as well as for his family and those who knew him well.
