

He was born January 2, 1927 to the late Wesley and Maude Cropper Howell at the Carrs Community of Lewis County. He married the love of his life, Juanita, the daughter of the late Richard and Dollie Polley on June 26, 1947. A few years later, they purchased their home and farm near Concord and here they raised their three daughters and his border collie, Sandy.
Mr. Howell was a life-long dairy and tobacco farmer and along with his wife, successfully built one of the first poultry house businesses in the area. He was a hard-working and loving man who never met a stranger. When he encountered an unfamiliar face, before long he would have the engaged in a conversation. He loved his family, friends, and his church.
He was an active member of the Concord Christian Church where he also served as Elder and previously as Sunday School superintendent and song leader.
In 1994, he was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel. In past years, he served on the Election Board for the Concord precinct and served several years on an advisory board for the ASCS.
He loved raising garden and sharing the harvest with friends and neighbors. Even with failing vision and health issues, with the help of his youngest child, Lisa, he still delighted in sharing his home-grown tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, turnips and radishes with others.
He is survived by his wife, who he was devoted to, cared for, and “loved beyond measure” for 67 years. He also leaves to morn his passing his three daughters, who consider him the “Best Dad in the World”; Nona Kay McClurg of Concord, Mary Ruth Mason and her husband, Gary, of Tollesboro and Lisa Fay Grayson and her husband Phillip, of Maysville. Also surviving are his three precious grandsons; his “name-sake) Harry Martin “Marty” Wisecup of Hamilton, Ohio, William Todd Wisecup and Christopher Lane Mason both of Tollesboro, along with step-grandchildren; Sherry and Andy Baker and their children Craig and Ashley, and Tommy and Callie Grayson and their children, Cameron, Brooklyn, Grant and Charlie all of Indiana. Other step-grandchildren are Marsha Dunigan, Gary McClurg, Tim McClurg, Christa Baldwin and Marla Potter and their families.
His surviving siblings include Doris Mackey of Concord, Bernard (Joann) Howell of Morehead, Fern Henderson of Vanceburg, and Betty Barrett and Gene (Bonnie) Howell of Bucyrus, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Frank McClurg, and five siblings; Alice Howell, Roy Howell, Warren Howell, Bea Vergne and Oleta Polley.
He also leaves a special neighbor and friend, Luther “Junior” and Dorothy Walker and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a multitude of friends. Even though all his nephews were special to him “Lovell” called him daily to chat and check on him and a lasting bond was formed between the two.
A celebration of life for Harry Howell will be held Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Barbour & Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro. His pastor and special friend, Larry Tucker, will officiate at the service. Burial will be in the Lewis County Memory Gardens in Black Oak. Pallbearers will be Junior Walker, Dale May, George Henderson, Jerry Walker, Cliff Applegate, and Al Ruark. Honorary pallbearers will be Mr. Howell’s grandsons along with the officers of the Concord Christian Church, Sonny Highfield, Lovel Polley, Roy Henderson, and Bernard Hilterbrandt. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Concord Christian Church.
Visitation for Mr. Howell will be from 5 – 8 pm Friday evening at the funeral. Everyone who had the privilege of meeting and knowing him were surely touched by his kind and giving sprit and he will truly be missed. We will treasure his life and the memory of him always.
