January 25, 1941 – May 9, 2025
Salvador, affectionately known as “Sal,” was born on January 25, 1941, in Vado, New Mexico. At the age of four, his family moved to Arizona—a place that would leave a lasting mark on his life and become home once again in his later years. His early life was grounded in the enduring values of family, faith, and perseverance—principles he carried with him throughout his life.
As a young man, Sal answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Armed Forces. His military service took him from Fort Hilton in New York, to Germany, and later to Fort Ord in Monterey, California. He served quietly, proudly, and with deep dedication—not for accolades, but out of a sense of duty and honor.
Following his time in the military, Sal began building a life anchored in love and family. He married Dolores Gomez, and together they had two daughters, Laura and Sophia. Though the marriage ended, Sal’s capacity for love did not. He welcomed a third daughter, Kathy, into his life and treated her as his own. His devotion to his children and grandchildren was unwavering, and he found great joy in his role as a grandfather and great-grandfather. He was also a cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Sal’s life was filled with a vibrant spirit and a deep love for the simple joys. He was an avid reader, a classic car enthusiast, and a lover of music and dance. Some of his favorites included Bruce Lee, Charles Bronson, and John Wayne films. He had a soft spot for “oldies but goodies” and especially enjoyed the sounds of Freddy Fender and many other classic Spanish musicians.
He adored spending time with family—never turning down a get-together, a weekend outing, or a trip to the beach, especially to Monterey and Santa Cruz. Whether bowling, enjoying time at the casino, or simply sharing stories, Sal’s infectious laugh and kind heart brought light wherever he went. He had a legendary sweet tooth and an even sweeter soul, always ready with a warm word or a million-dollar smile that lit up every room.
Above all, Sal loved his mother deeply and shared a special, unbreakable bond with her—a connection that defined much of his compassion and loyalty in life.
Sal was preceded in death by his parents Francisco and Guadalupe (Soto) Favela, his brothers Isauro, Fred, Ramon, Santos, and Alvino, and his sisters Frances Rodriguez, Manuela “Nellie” Dominguez, and Consuelo Cervantes. He is survived by his loving daughters, Laura Favela (Porfirio Rodriquez), Sophia Favela Madrigal (John Madrigal) and Kathy Becerril-Garcia (Mario Garcia Jr.) His loving sisters, Rosa Flores and Lupe Favela Stremel, along with his grandchildren Anglique Pimentel, Vincent Salvador Ladino, Felicia Guerra, Salvador Madrid, Albert Madrid, Benny Garcia Jr., Roman Garcia, Jimmy Madrigal, Rochelle Rayray, Bernadette Rayray, Abey Pinedo, Kaiden Garcia, Vincent Garcia,12 great-grandchildren, and extended family who carry forward his values, his laughter, and his spirit. A special thanks of gratitude extended to his compassionate caregivers, his nephew Chava and his primary caregiver and sister Lupe Favela Stremel.
Sal’s life was one of integrity, resilience, and generosity. As we bid farewell, we take comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on—in the traditions he cherished, the joy he brought, and the love he so freely gave.
