
Albert Kerr Bates, 99, of Whiting, NJ, passed away on Friday, June 9, 2023 at The Pines in Whiting. Born Fall River, MA, he lived in Hazlet before moving to Whiting many years ago. Albert worked for New Jersey Natural Gas Co., retiring in 1988. He served as a crew chief in the 434th Troop Carrier Group, Ninth Air Force during World War II. Albert was a member of the Retirees Club and The Lamp Lighters. He was a longtime member of VFW Post #8745 of Whiting, serving as a former Chaplin. Albert was a former member and Deacon of the Ocean County Evangelical Free church of Lakehurst. He had a love of church hymns and was an active church choir member at the churches he had belonged to over the years.
He was predeceased by his parents Orswald and Christina (Kerr) Bates; his son Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Glen D. Bates; and his beloved wife of 77 years Evelyn Bates. Surviving are his son David A. Bates and his wife Janet of York Spring, PA; his sister Theresa Kearney Bates; his granddaughter Erika; two great granddaughters Gwen and Taegen; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Douglas and Ruth Hintze; and many caring nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 22, 2023 from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, with a Funeral Service starting at 12:30 pm at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main Street, Toms River. Burial will follow at Fair View Cemetery in Middletown, NJ.
