Evelyn Feitelson, 93, of Toms River and Monroe Township, New Jersey, peacefully passed away surrounded by her loving family on July 4, 2024. Evelyn will forever be remembered as a loving and compassionate wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to everyone who knew her.
Evelyn grew up in Mount Kisco, White Plains, and Peekskill, New York. After graduating as valedictorian of her high school class, Evelyn worked as a dental hygienist at Veterans Administration unit until meeting her husband, Herbert (“Herb”) Feitelson. Evelyn’s mother approved of Herb because he passed the requirements of having well-polished shoes and being nicely dressed despite being a “city slicker” from the Bronx! Shortly thereafter, they were married and had two sons: Jerald (“Jerry”) in October 1953, and Mark in February 1957. Evelyn was a devoted mother and raised her children with unconditional love, patience, encouragement, acceptance, and tolerance. Evelyn and Herb started their family in Jackson Heights, Queens, and then moved to East Brunswick, New Jersey in 1965. In 2001, Evelyn and Herb moved to Monroe Township, New Jersey where they lived until their 70th wedding anniversary. Their final home was in Brandywine Living at Toms River, an assisted living facility.
Evelyn worked in New York City as a showroom model from 1960s through the 1980s. Evelyn went back to school and earned a nursing degree in 1975. She never practiced nursing but joked that she graduated just for the uniform. Never one to turn down a fashion moment, Evelyn had an outfit for every occasion. She tried several sports, such as skiing, tennis, and golf. Although none stuck, she accumulated a fabulous collection of sports outfits.
Throughout her life, Evelyn and Herb traveled with friends and family throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Middle East. Evelyn loved collecting artwork on her trips and each piece she and Herb acquired was meaningful to her. Evelyn also enjoyed playing canasta, going to the beauty parlor, shopping with friends, and entertaining friends and family.
Evelyn was not only physically beautiful but was remarkably beautiful in countless other ways to her family and many close friends over the decades with her compassion, empathy, kindness, selflessness, and love. The love and focus of Evelyn’s life were Herb, her children, and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. She has now entered what she referred to as the “happy hunting grounds” where she looked forward to reuniting with her parents, sister, close friends, and other relatives that have passed on.
Evelyn is survived by her doting and loyal husband of 71 years, Herb Feitelson, her sons, Jerry Feitelson (Eva) and Mark Feitelson (Helene), her grandchildren, Laura Feitelson, Justine Feitelson, Aaron Feitelson, and Cory Feitelson (Ellen), and her brother, Harold Katz. Evelyn was predeceased in death by her parents, Dora and Herman Katz, and her sister, Blanche Katz Casden Polansky.
A graveside service for Evelyn will be held Monday, July 8, 2024 from 1:00 PM at B'nai Israel Memorial Park Cemetery, 1224 W Whitty Rd, Toms River, NJ 08755.
