
Hy was born January 26, 1928, in Volosk, Czechoslovakia to Meyer and Chaya Leah and had a younger brother Shmuel. Hy’s mother sent Hy to Budapest hoping that he would survive the Holocaust. Hy was forced to march to Germany in the spring of 1944 from the Dohany Street Synagogue in Budapest. He survived 3 concentration camps—Mutthousen, Dachau, and was liberated from Gunskirchen by the American military. Hy’s mother and brother were murdered in Auschwitz.
Hy moved to America and married Florence Wallo in 1955. They had four children, Steven, Kenneth, Michael, and Helene. They lived in Toms River together until Flo’s death in 2001. He was the owner of the Toms River Kosher Caterer. Hy moved to Bethesda, MD to be with his son Kenneth and daughter in law Sindy in 2018.
Hy is survived by his children, Kenneth and wife Sindy Udell, Steven and wife Sheri, Michael and wife Tommy, Helene and 5 grandchildren, Adam, Eric and wife Juliane, Hannah, Ethan, and Daniel Josovitz; brother Mark; and long term girlfriend Sandi Gottesman. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 23 at Congregation B’nai Israel in Toms River at 11:00 am. Shiva will be in Bethesda, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Yad Vashem, Leket Israel; Congration B’nai Israel, or Ohev Sholom, The National Synagogue, DC.
