Joseph G. Whyte, age 78, of Toms River, New Jersey passed away peacefully at Community Hospital on September 26, 2024 following a long illness. Born in Boston, and raised in Roxbury, Massachusetts, he eventually settled in Matawan, New Jersey with his wife Pam (Kaschner), where they spent 30+ years raising their family, before retiring to Toms River in the early 2000’s.
Joe graduated from Mission Church High School in Roxbury, where he excelled in shenanigans and sports. His prowess on the athletic fields sparked visions of stardom, which were quickly extinguished following a 3-pitch strikeout during open try outs for the Boston Red Sox. Soon thereafter, he moved to Matawan, landing a job in the mailroom at Johnson & Johnson, while simultaneously attending Rutgers University. Over 15+ years at J&J he rose through the ranks, eventually becoming their Director of Purchasing. He would hold similar positions at L’Oréal & Ferraro USA before retiring.
While in Matawan, he became active in youth sports, as a board member of the Matawan-Aberdeen Little League, and held various coaching positions there, as well as with the St. Benedict’s and Matawan-Aberdeen basketball programs.
Joe had the gift for gab, and never met a stranger. He would talk to anyone, anywhere, and at any time…whether they wanted to or not. Some of his favorite topics were his 6 cherished grandchildren, the Red Sox, and his beloved pug Max.
He was predeceased by his parents, Edward Whyte & Jeannie Whyte (Mitchell), & Max the pug, and is survived by Pamela Whyte (Kaschner), his wife of 57 years, their 3 children, Walter, Joe (and wife Bronwen), Hilary, and his 6 grandchildren…Courtney, Seosaph, Kaschner, Margot, Mabel, & Brooke. All will miss him dearly but are thankful for the memories that will last forever.
Visitation will take place on Monday September 30, 2024 between the hours of 6-8pm at Horizon Funeral & Cremation Services, 1329 Route 37 West, Toms River, New Jersey 08755.
Private cremation will follow.
