Pietro “Pete” Barbera, acclaimed professional artist, passed away on July 22, 2016, at the age of 89. He was born in Jersey City, NJ, and was a proud veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army. He worked as a musician, upholsterer of boat interiors and custom cars, a house builder, furniture builder and a mason, before becoming an outstanding professional artist in his sixties. He never gave up despite physical and financial limitations restricting his life; every time a new obstacle blocked his path, Pietro refocused his creativity, and used a new medium to create his art. Although most acclaimed for his art using crayons, Pietro also worked with clay creating sculptures, and carousel horses using masking tape and newspapers to fill a wire mesh frame. He painted many modern paintings on canvas with oils, later moving to acrylics, including nautical paintings, and western cowboys on horses. Pietro was a humble man driven by creativity. He gave the world not only his art, but of himself. He was a compassionate, humorous, eccentric human being, whose personal happiness thrived by doing for others. He was always ready with a helping hand.
Pietro is survived by his loving family: son and daughter-in-law Philip and Marie Barbera; his two daughters: Jackie Risden and Rebecca Barbera; and his cherished grandchildren: Dominic, Nicole, Peter, Tina, John and Stacy. “Pete” will
be dearly missed by his family and friends.
