Raphael "Ray" M. Hughes Sr.

Raphael (Ray) M. Hughes, Sr., 87, of Toms River NJ passed away on March 22, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Jersey City moved to Weehawken, Ray bought his dream home with his wife, JoAnn and children moving to Toms River in 1969 where he spent the rest of his life. Ray retired as a toll collector from the Garden State Parkway.

Ray was an avid sports fan, and his favorite teams were Yankees, Rangers and Colts. He was huge animal lover often watching animal shows. He loved spending time with his family.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 49 years, JoAnn Cangiano Hughes in 2009; his grandson Michael Hughes, and son- in- law Daniel Douma.

Surviving are his (5) children Rachelle Douma, Raphael M. Hughes, Jr and wife Dianne, Michael Hughes and his wife Sue, Suzanne Krean and her husband Chad, JoAnn Hughes and her partner Vincent DeSena. Ray also has (7) grandchildren, Candi, Christi, Cara, Cali, Raphael III, Caitlin, Jacob and great grandchildren Malorey, Cooper, Ruby, Piper, Maverick and one on the way, Palmer. Also survived by his brother Jerry.

The visitation will be held on Monday March 28, 2022, from 2-4 and 7-9pm at Anderson and Campbell Funeral 703 Main Street,. Toms River, NJ. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10:30am at the funeral home. Entombment will follow at the Ocean County Memorial Park in Toms River. Ray will joining his loving wife in eternity. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Raphael’s memory to the Popcorn Park Zoo in Forked River, NJ.
