It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Alan Sora on January 21, 2022 in Scarborough, Ontario in his 66th year. Al was born in Toronto, Ontario on March 6,1955. The son of Shigeki Edward Sora and Shirley (Handa) Sora (both predeceased). Al grew up in Scarborough playing hockey for Dorset Park and attended Lord Roberts Public School and Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute where he met so many people he remained friends with his entire life. It was during these years that Al developed his love for sports and music.
In his teens and twenties Al and his friends went to as many music festivals and concerts they could afford, and some they couldn’t so they would hop the fence and sneak in to get a peak. Al had such a deep knowledge and appreciation of music and could name bands and songs and the dates they hit No1 off the top of his head.
Al also loved learning. He never liked to admit it but he knew so much about world History, geography and politics and was happy to tell you his opinions on all of it! When he was in his twenties, Al went to Guatemala to be immersed in Spanish so he could work for a youth program in Costa Rica called Pueblito. Al loved his time there and never forgot the children he took care of. Many years later they would be contacting him and sending him pictures of themselves, married with their own children and thanking him for helping to get off the streets and into a good life.
Here at home, Al had a strong connection to the Japanese-Canadian community and made many close friends at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre where he met the love of his life, Kana Yamashita. Al and Kana were married in 1992 and together they had the other two loves of their lives, Giordan and Krystine. For years, nothing made Al happier than watching Giordan play hockey and Krystine compete in gymnastics and track. When Krystine left for university in Florida, Al and the family would make their way down every year to make sure they were there to cheer Krystine on. When he wasn’t cheering on Krystine, you would find him watching the Toronto Maple Leafs and cursing about how they need more grit or questioning a contract signing. He would often get lost for hours in hockey talk with friends and family, and he loved and cherished every minute of it. Even to his final moments, he joked about partying on University avenue for the Leafs’ Stanley Cup parade. In the last 6 years, Al also spent much time with his beloved puppies, Bauer and Levi. Together they formed the heart of Al’s life. His family.
Al has left us all with amazing memories and so much love. Together we will celebrate and mourn such a great loss from our lives: wife Kana, son Giordan, daughter Krystine; brother Dave( Debbie), brother Randy(Dianne), Sister April (David) and nieces and nephews, Danyelle (Andrew), Erich (Jen), Austin and Mitchell. Mother-in-law, Sumiko Yamashita; Father-in-law, Mitsuru Yamashita; Brother-in-law, Takato Yamashita (Toshiko) and nephew Hiroki and niece Himari.
‘Though I know I’ll never lose affection,
for people and things that went before,
I know I’ll often stop and think about them,
in my life I’ve loved them all.’
- The Beatles
