It has almost been one month since our mother's death.  A memorial mass will be held at St. Fidelis C.S. at 7:30pm this Friday December 4th.

My condolences to you and your family during this difficult time.  You are in my thoughts and prayers.  Keep close the fond and happy memories that you have with her.

My grandmother's life was filled with love. It radiated from her like the sun radiates warmth. It was an infectious love too. If you were around her, you wanted to make sure you could spread it as well. On the day she passed, my grandfather turned to me and said, Ashalee, it had to be a massive heart attack that took your grandmother because her heart was so big. It had so much love.
 
My grandmother was a very selfless woman. Like many Italians after World War II, Assunta and Francesco struggled to create a better life for their family. Following my grandfather's immigration to Canada in 1956, my grandmother brought her two young boys with her, my father and my uncle, by ship. Consequently, it was the last cruise my dad and his brother ever enjoyed together.  In Canada, she worked as a seamstress, at the original Tip Top Tailors on Front Street, overlooking Maple Leaf Baseball Stadium, where legend has it that Babe Ruth hit a homerun into Lake Ontario.
 
On top of working, she always wanted to make sure that everyone was taken care of. If you mentioned you were sick, she would show up to your house the next day with multiple containers of brodo. If you mentioned in passing that you liked gnocchi, you would find your freezer stocked with bags the next day. When I went through a phase where I was no longer eating meat, she didn't scold me, she adapted. Instead of meatballs, she made me fish ballsand they were actually pretty good.  And she did this all because she loved you. She loved everyone. You could have known her for just a day and she would tell you that too.
 
Anyone here who knows Assunta will know that she would always greet you at the door with a deafening kiss. Dammi un bach would result in my grandmother giving you not one, but multiple kisses on the cheek. And if you were a grandchild, there was always something accompanied with those kisses. My grandmother would thrust money into your hand, looking around the room to make sure nobody noticed. Don't tell nobody! And put in your piggybank!
 
She loved to laugh, and it was easy to make her laugh too. Even when she was mad at my cousins and I, we could make her laugh. When in disciplinary mode, she would look at us with her hand in Italian strike position and say I fix you! My cousins and I finished her sentence for her with a snack? And it became a meme in our family from that day forward.
 
Today is a hard day for us because we are saying goodbye to a person who gave us so much love and never asked for anything back. Even now, while I am talking to you all, I feel like there is a massive part of me that is missing. I keep looking at my phone, expecting her to call me and tell me that she loves me. I keep hearing her voice, calling my name and telling me that I'm her little bride and that I am as beautiful as she is. After her passing, my grandfather said to me that he'd known this woman for all his life. He first met her when she was 16 and he was 19. He said he's known her for 70 years and that now he's truly lost something.
 
The beautiful side about death though is that you are left with these wonderful memories. You have happy, hilarious and loving stories of this person that you can share with each other. While we looked at pictures to create a slideshow at the funeral home, my family and I laughed. We remembered and shared funny stories that we had with our grandmother. I know my grandmother would be happy to know that we were thinking about her and laughing about all the wonderful moments we shared with her. And you don't have to worry Nonno. Because we all love her so much, you will never have truly lost her.
 
Nonna Assunta, you will be missed so much and you touched so many with your love.
 
Until we meet again Nonna, we love you very much.

Although the grip of grief pains you to the depths of your souls, may the gentle touch you still feel, the laughter ringing in your ears, the smell of home cooked meals,  the hugs and smiles still  warm in  your heart, the loving gaze upon the little ones, the phone calls checking up on you yet again...even those complaints which you now long to hear one last time; may these memories console you and bring you peace.  God bless you and keep you safe in His watch.  Sending love to all.

Speaking on behalf my family I want to express my condolences to the Venditti family. My mother, Nicoletta, loved her very much and always enjoyed her company, they were like sisters. While my late father was ill she would always call me to find out how he was doing. She truly was a special caring person who will be missed but not forgotten.

The soul needs to be comforted, and we are  grasping for traces of it right now. If you knew I used to cry in the car ride just upon leaving Nonna Assunta's house from a normal Sunday lunch visit, perhaps you can imagine the love she stirs up in me and how grave my loss is now that she is gone. I dont have many relatives here with me, and she was the only of Frank's relatives who would habitually call my cellphone, despite language barriers. A truly good woman, who made me feel wholeheartedly welcome everytime I spent time with her. Crying. Profound sadness. I sincerely loved her.
