I was so sad to open my Tour of Duty magazine and see your name as I scanned the obituaries.  You were a bright light in my day!  My deepest sympathy to your family and friends who mourn your loss.

We were very sorry to hear of Barry's passing. 
Barry made regular visits to my father in his nursing home, always bringing him a newspaper and a coffee. When Barry went on a vacation he would bring my father a gift from his travels. 
He was a very kind and generous man.

My family lived across the street from Barry for at least 15 years! I'll never forget you bringing my newborn babygirl Breanna a very Large "Tigger" on Christmas Eve before doing your teddy bear run! To this day we still have it and many photos of my baby kissing it! You always invited my daughter over to your house to play with Molly, put on the most amazing fireworks display in our backyard, always helped out your neighbours, were kind and supportive during the passing of my mom and so much more. Thank you for the memories, your generosity and being an amazing neighbour. Your suffering is over, my mom will be able to give you a hug of thanks, may you rest in peace kind sir! My condolences to your family and friends.

Barry & I worked together for 5 years at 55 Div. He was the booker, I was the Female Custodial Officer. While he & I bumped heads quite a few times, we did manage to get along. Yes, Barry was a very generous man, & kind at heart.
He boasted at being the oldest Constable in the station, & I wasn't surprised that he was still working up until recently. Rest in peace, Bar.

I worked at 55 Division from January 1992 till July 2001 and always remembered Barry as a very kind and caring person.  May you rest in peace my friend.

The last few days I have been thinking of Barry.  How he looked after my brother Brian on the day my brother Jeff got married.  Mom attended the wedding with no worries over Brian.  Barry graciously escorted the procession when Brian died in 1977 and saluted the casket when it went by.  That was a very thoughtful act,.  I will remember you in my prayers.

Barry Small was no small man. Big muscles he had and his biggest was his heart.I have known Barry my entire life and Barry has always been there for me and my family whenever we asked of him. Barry wasn't just a friend to our family he was part of our family. Barry was like a big kid which was great for us kids growing up as he would always offer to take us someplace like camping or to the beach or going for a hike or just to grab a burger at Harry's.
Barry was a great man and I appreciated everything he did for my sister Susan and my Mom over the years. To Danielle, Barry's family and many friends I am sorry for your loss of a great man. Barry will be deeply missed.

Barry, I had the privilege of meeting and knowing you through my beautiful friend/colleague Susan.  I will treasure the little gifts you bought for me, even though you didn't know me that well. I have lit one of your beautiful candles in your honour. And I will remember the days you snuck up behind me in the office and scared me right out of my chair.  You had a real joy for life and lived BIG. I hope you know what a profound presence you were in so many lives.  You have taught us to enjoy and savour life as it is precious and fleeting.  To Susan, Danielle and loved ones, my deepest condolences to you in this time of transition.  I pray the memories and stories of Barry will help fill the hole in your hearts. Rest in Peace Barry Small, and I know you will continue to be a strong presence in the lives of your loved ones.

I remember Barry from years ago, and I remember him from my more recent drop ins to Scarborough over the past few years. These recent memories I have are of dropping by only to find out I would not have a visit with Susan because she and Barry were once again away on a trip somewhere. It is a good thing to know Barry and Susan were smart enough to always 'seize the day'.!
Susan, I Have been thinking of you both through this past few months as life got more challenging, and of course now all of our hearts are with you.

How does one start to talk about this man Barry Small. It should be very easy. He is Loving, caring .generous ,honest and funny of course he is crazy silly at times. He made so many people laugh, smile and made sure they were happy. He always had an ear to listen and knew the right words to say to make things better,. This  is the Barry  I knew. He took me on patrol with him once when I was in Toronto and what a interesting night it was to say the least, the important part of that night was Barry making sure I was safe because this is what he does. Many year's ago  he gave my Son one of his hockey sticks and what a gift it was since my son still has it. I will miss him calling me doll when we talked, I will miss his email cards that he  often sent out. Most I will miss his amazing foot massage that I would get when we got together which was not often enough. To my Cousin Susan and Danielle from the bottom of my heart I am so sorry for your loss. You now have a Angel watching over you. Barry  you will be missed more than you could know.

Though I didn't know him personally, I knew of Barry's kindness. Years ago when my younger brother was hospitalized for months with an illness, Barry sent over a huge white stuffed dog for him which my brother named Snowball. Almost twenty years later, a much loved Snowball the dog still resides at my parents house. I hope Barry's family takes comfort in knowing how many sick children he made happy, and whenever I see that stuffed toy I will think of him.

Living next door to Barry for 15 years meant there was never a dull moment.  From trips to the cottage where you taught our two children to fish, swing on the rope & make campfires, entertaining them with your various costumes, movie nights, lighting up your house (and ours) at Christmas, mowing our lawn, inviting yourself for dinner, your silly jokes and practically burning the house down with all the fireworks - this and so much more was just a part of your big heart and zest for living.  Thank you for all the laughs and the great memories Barry.  You will be missed.

There was no shortage of laughs when Barry was in the room! He was truly a kind soul. My condolences to my cousin, Susan.

Barry, you have been part of our lives for 32 years... you have been there for me through everything... a wedding, 2 kids, and countless surgeries... you "barry-ed" your way into my intensive care room (past an angry nurse) to give me a teddy bear...  who is going to call me at 3 in the afternoon and TELL me he was going to be there for dinner - and that he wanted hamburgers ??? you have no idea how much you have meant to us and no idea how very much you will be missed.... love you bud

Barry (Mr. Small) was a great neighbour, a patient driving instructor, and a cheerful teddy bear delivery man at Christmas. Thanks for all of the good times on Lynn Heights and at your cottage, you will be missed.

There is already a deep void here at 55 Division where your large personality used to be. The station has just not been the same without you and everyone is deeply saddened by your passing.
We have spent some time sharing our favourite memories of you through our tears and we have all been truly blessed to have known you and been able to work with you. Your kindness and selfless nature will never be forgotten.
Thank you for serving our city and community for so many years and for leaving a lasting impression on this station and everyone who has worked here, both past and present.
Even through your treatments and difficult times that came with your illness, I was always in awe of the absolute dedication you had to this job and your desire to continue coming to work for as long as you could. 
It was always clear to us here at work how much your family meant to you, proudly showing off your latest photos to all of us as we passed the front desk. My heart truly goes out to your daughter, Danielle, as well as Susan and the rest of your family who have lost such an incredible man. May they find some comfort in hearing how many lives you have touched over the years and the impression you have left on all of us here in your policing family.
You fought hard Barry, and it's time for you to rest now, free from pain.
You will never be forgotten and will be forever in our hearts.

We had some good laughs as "locker mates."  Passing as shifts came and went.  Thanks very much.  I see I may have missed knowing a little more but appreciate a lot those fun moments. You tried to give off the appearance of having a hard, outside shell but anyone that knew you, knew you had a soft centre that shone through in so many wonderful ways. 

From always sending out your Christmas cards, to the hundreds of teddy bears you donated to children, you were a kind and caring person.  You always made sure no one's birthday was forgotten too. 

You were a big kid at heart...

Your late night firework displays in the station lot and tossing a firecracker in our direction when we least expected it, you
always kept us on our toes. 

You had a quick wit and could catch us with a one-liner that was always well timed. 

You had a way with the station's P.A. system.... From "Hey you! Move your car out of the salleyport!" to serenading us with some Jackson 5 songs late at night... we always knew when you were at the helm of the front desk or running the booking hall. 

Even through your tough and painful times, you soldiered in to work and put on a brave face and smile. There are very few people, if any, that would have the strength to do that...

Barry, you are deeply mourned and missed by your friends and family at the Double Nickle. 
You served your community with distinction and represented our Service well for a remarkable 40 years. 

It's time to hang your hat and belt and rest.

May you finally be at peace.
