When I think of Grandma D, or "Chrissy" as Granddad used to call her, I can't help but smile about all the wonderful memories I have of her.  In every memory, her hair was done, her nails were manicured, and she had beautiful skin.  She was always dressed so nicely with beads around her neck and her purse in hand. She was elegant and proud, and had the most beautiful smile.  I will never forget the time we spent together on Parkview Hill Crescent, in the house my dad grew up in, especially Sunday afternoons.  Sunday afternoons consisted of looking after the rosebushes with dad, playing catch with Sean in the backyard, playing with original Barbie Dolls with Heather, and colouring with Uncle Bruce at the dining room table.  Sundays at Grandmas meant we could play dad's old drums in the basement as loud as we wanted; Grandma never cared, and Mom was just happy they weren't coming home with us.  Sunday afternoons were when Grandma shared her amazing stories of growing up, how she met my Granddad and all the wonderful memories they had together, riding on the back of a motorcycle, working at Simpsons and she also introduced me to the wonderful world of classic television.  But the best part of Sunday afternoons was always lunch of celery with cream cheese, cream of celery soup, cheese in the oven, and ginger ale (from a glass bottle of course).  And as we would get ready to leave, Grandma always made sure there was a two dollar bill in each of her grandchildren's hands.  I still remember how much candy Heather, Sean and I used to buy at the corner store with our two dollar bills thanks to Grandma.
Family dinners at Grandma D's were something I know all of us loved as well, as we all carry on her food traditions as best we can.  Pineapple rings with jello and green and red maraschino cherries, veggie casserole, rice krispy squares, cherry cheesecake, chilli sauce, magic bars, lemon meringue pie, and even the lime jello ring with cabbage and other vegetables I think only my Dad ate.  And although I know Grandma loved to cook for all of us, if she wanted to go out for a meal instead, Swiss Chalet was the only restaurant she chose.
There are so many memories I have of my Grandma, not just Sundays, but every birthday and holiday.  Birthdays weren't complete without gifts wrapped in the comic section from Grandma D. I'm sure Heather and Sean remember, just as I do, the annual gift of notepads, construction paper, and pencil crayons with the added bonus of comics to read.  It was never the only gift, but its the one that I always remember.  
Christmas was like every other holiday, we spent them together, but after Granddad passed away, Grandma D started sleeping over Christmas Eve, so she could be with us Christmas morning.  I gave up my bed for Grandma D, and had a trusty spot on the floor instead for many years, and while I always complained, especially of the rug burn on my forehead I woke up to one Christmas morning, I wouldn't give up those memories of being with Grandma D for anything.
The last day we all spent together as a family with Grandma, was Boxing Day 2010.  And I remember discussing on that day the amazing things my Grandma was able to see between 1914 and 2010 during her 96 years.  Grandma D lived through two world wars, the Cold War and the Great Depression.  She saw the invention of the television, computers, the internet, and cell phones.  She lived to see women get the right to vote, the first female Prime Minister, and the first African-American President.  She saw the widespread adoption of cars and airplanes, and the first man on the moon.  She witnessed the creation of Mickey Mouse and the CBC as well as the careers of many music legends and movie stars.  
But most importantly Grandma was a part of many important family events. She and Granddad celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, she attended mom and dad's wedding over 30 years ago and got to share in Uncle Bruce's happiness with Annaliza over the past 5 years.  She lived to see all three of her grandchildren become adults, and became a great grandmother to Leah in 2009.  I remember how much Grandma D loved brides, and she was visited this past August by Sean and his beautiful bride Lindsay dressed in their wedding attire.  
Sean and Heather, Mom and Dad and I will miss Grandma D greatly, but we will always remember her incredible 96 years, including all she saw, all her stories, and all of her delicious food with a smile.

Bruce, our condolences to you and your family.   I  have a lot of fond memories growing up in Parkview Hills.  I remember your mother and mine bowling at O'connor Bowl and various other socials in the neighbourhood.  I lost my mother last August so I know how hard it is.
