Dearest Mary Lou and family.  John and I were so sorry to learn of David's passing. We have fond memories of lively conversations at the Murphy's dinner table, on more than one occasion, and stories of your cottage weekends were enough to make anyone envious.  My daughter, Kate, was fortunate enough to join you up there, on more than one occasion, and it was always a great time. David will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by many. Dear Mary Lou and Family,
David and I were classmates for all of our elementary school years at St. Thomas Aquinas and for our undergraduate years at St. Mary's. When we finished there I went to work in Vancouver for a few years whereas David went on directly to Dal Law School where I joined him again ( he in third year and I in first year) in 1966. We only lived one street away from each other in Halifax and for all our years at St. Thomas Aquinas we played together a lot of the time. Although it is now politically incorrect we much enjoyed "cowboys and Indians". I can still envisage a cowboy costume someone gave him for a birthday or Christmas present. It was a complete set of vest, cowboy hat, holster, vest and six shooter! I don't know how many "bad guys" each of us claimed to have "bagged" but I am sure we both were accomplished liars! Our birthdays were only two days apart - his on the 20th and mine on the 22nd. Those were good times and I remember them fondly. Age, distance, different practice specialities and just the plain pressures of life meant we didn't see much of each other after David graduated from Dal in 1967. We did meet in Toronto on a few occasions in the 47 years since then and laughed and joked about the old times. I would like to think we were good friends in those days. Thus I share in some smaller way than you the great sorrow at his all too early death. You and your family are in my thought and prayers today.

David,

You were one of my oldest friends, 64 years to be exact, and it pains me to say good-bye.I remember all those years ago in Halifax playing tennis at the boathouse and so many dances that we went to. You always fancied yourself a better dancer than you were but I have to admit you were pretty good. Even in later life.
The cottage years were golden and I don't have enough words to say how important those times were for me and my family. Thank you for being part of my life. And thank you for the memories.

David was a dear friend of my father and I grew up knowing him as a surrogate dad! He influenced my choice to pursue law and I fondly remember the discussions we had at his cottage where he would instil in me an appreciation and respect for the rule of law and the necessary function  of justice in our society. He inspired, protected, and guided me - I will miss him and cherish the memories forever!  My thoughts and prayers are with you Katie and Mary Lou.
