With deeply broken hearts, we regret to share the devastating news of Domingos Lima Martins Couto's passing.
Domingos was born on January 13th, 1963, in Castelo Do Neiva, Viana, Portugal. He was the youngest son of the late Domingos Couto and Virginia Dias. He grew up on a small family farm and later spent most of his young adolescent life working as a fisherman across the Atlantic Ocean. At the age of 22, he moved to Canada to start his new life as a young immigrant, where he began his lifelong career as a roofer all while also pursuing the hobby of achieving black-belt certification in Taekwondo in his spare time. After meeting his future wife, Elisabete Barros, at a small local bakery near his home, the two wed the following year on November 19th, 1988. They went on to have two daughters, Daniela Couto and Liliana Couto. Later on in life, he became the cherished father-in-law of Nawid Zaman and the very proud grandfather of his first grandson, Zayden Zaman.
Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to being a hard worker so that he could provide for his family. On his days off, he found joy in being a handyman, fixing things around his home, playing the weekly lottery, tending to his garden, and having his morning coffee outdoors while watching the birds. Some of his collectibles included unique bottles to display and foreign currency from all around the world.
During the winters, he enjoyed having pizza and movie nights with his family gathered around his fireplace, eagerly anticipating the celebration of his favorite holiday, Christmas. In the summers, he would wake the neighbors with his cheerful whistling, loud singing, and song-playing on his garage radio.
Proud of his Portuguese heritage, Domingos was a passionate supporter of his favorite soccer team, cheering enthusiastically during the Euro and World Cup events. He looked forward to his yearly vacations back home and always expressed his long-term goal of retiring there.
In a devastating shock to our family, in June of 2023, he was diagnosed with ALS. He made the decision to keep his illness private, a wish we collectively respected. Domingos fought very hard to remain strong, embodying the fighter we all knew him to be. Sadly, after a short, extremely aggressive battle with this horrendous disease, he passed away on the morning of November 7th, 2023, at the home he loved in Toronto, Canada, surrounded by his closest family.
We will wholeheartedly keep him alive in our memories as the energetic, funny, hardworking, proud family man who was full of life. Domingos will remain in our hearts forever with the countless memories he left us all to cherish.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, daughters, son-in-law, grandson, friends, co-workers, and his entire family.
Family and friends may visit at the Jerrett Funeral Home, 1141 St. Clair Ave. W. (1 block east of Dufferin) on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 from 5:00pm-6:30pm.
