ELIZABETH MARY HARPUR (Duncan, Farncombe) - September 14, 1930 - August 19, 2013 In her 83rd year, peacefully at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, after a full life and a very short illness. Elizabeth is survived by and lovingly remembered by her daughters, Colleen Turney and Deborah (Allen) Faulkner, son-in-law Peter Turney, grandchildren - Ryan, Hilary, Bronte and Maximilian, brothers - Tom (Susan) Harpur, George (Dawn) Harpur and sister Jane (Allan) Lee, plus many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins. Elizabeth will also be fondly remembered by her special friend of many years, Donald Farncomb, and his family. Also survived by William Duncan. Elizabeth also leaves many friends who will miss her deeply. Mum was predeceased by her mother and father as well as her soulmate, Norman Wilson.
Elizabeth was a caring, spiritual woman who always thought of everyone else's needs over her own. Her faith was unwavering and her heart was immense. None of us are perfect, and Elizabeth was no different, but her fault lay in simply not knowing how important she was to her family and friends. Her famous telephone message "Hello, it's just your Mum" said it all. Mum loved puzzles - crosswords and Sudokus - both of which she excelled at. A time of peace for this busy woman was for her to sit with a glass of white wine, working a puzzle. It was a joy for us to see her somewhat still. Mum will forever be remembered as 'Em', 'Gramma-Hunny' and 'Broom Hilda' - she was forever sweeping, dusting or cleaning...relaxing was not one of Mum's strong suits.
Mum loved to play piano and sing. She had a beautiful voice and adored singing hymns (of which she would cry through many!) Mum worked many years and retired from Rio-Algom where she made life-long, meaningful friendships. Upon retirement, Mum was able to spend time with her grandchildren and then volunteered at the Food Bank. Throughout her years, she was exceptionally generous with many charities, including her church.
We celebrated Mum's 80th birthday and as her answer for what she wanted was always "just a pair of nylons" she received 8 pairs. This shows how simple Mum's expectations were and no matter how much we wanted to spoil her, she'd much rather we didn't.
Mum - we miss you more than you will ever know. We will have a toast to you and no matter where we go, you will be with us . You were a tremendously remarkable woman.
A Memorial Service will be held at the TRULL "NORTH TORONTO" FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE, 2704 Yonge St. (5 blocks south of Lawrence Ave.) on Thursday August 29, at 11:00 am. Cremation has taken place. In memoriam donations may be made to the Sunnybrook Research Foundation, C/O the M. C. T. D. Research.
