Gary Stephen Folkes passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 7, 2021 after a short battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his beloved brother and only sibling, Donald H. Folkes, and his parents, Harry & Jenny (Jane Moore) Folkes. Gary leaves behind his three nieces, Nancy Hillis, Tracy Folkes Hanson (Rob), and Kelly Lashley (Bill), seven great nieces and nephews, and a great, great niece and nephew. He will be fondly remembered by his Moore and Folkes family members and dearly missed by his friends, especially those from his church community – Greenwood Gospel Chapel.
Gary was proud to have worked for Manulife for his entire career. He loved all sports and was privileged to have known Wayne Gretzky and Wayne’s Dad early in Wayne’s hockey career. He was very involved for many, many years with the East York Hockey Club and you would find Gary’s name engraved on a little Stanley cup at the Stan Wadlow arena! He also volunteered with East York Baseball. Gary enjoyed travelling, including two trips to Hawaii. He has made his final journey and is now at home with His Lord and Saviour.
Due to the current health precautions, a celebration of life will be planned for a later date. In the meantime, donations may be made in Gary’s memory to:
Canadian Cancer Society,
MSC Canada or
“Cure Michael” (CureSPG50, SPG50), a “Go Fund Me” campaign for a young boy who lives on Gary’s street and is suffering from a rare degenerative disease.
