Mimí passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on Monday, Oct 21, 2024 at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Loving father of Grazia (Tim) and Vito (Catherine), and cherished grandfather to Corinne, Paola, Paolo, Julia, Abbey and Carley. Mimí is now reunited in heaven with his extraordinary wife Myriam, the love of his life, his wonderful son Paolo, and all the family members who have gone before us, including his dearest parents Paolo Scoppio and Grazia Tempesta, and his siblings Antonietta, Franca, Anna, Cosimo and baby brother Girolamo who carried the same name. He will be forever remembered by friends and extended family in Italy including his nieces and nephews, Giusy, Graziano (Antonella), Rosaria (Francesco), Leonardo (Laura), Emanuele (Antonella), his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Paolo (Shigeko), Mariateresa, Giuseppe (Giusy), Luisa, Agnese, and Lucia, as well as their children and grandchildren. Mimí will be deeply missed by many friends in Toronto, where he and Myriam and their three young children immigrated in the 70s, establishing a company to import specialty foods and goods from Italy, the MSM Import-Export (Mimí Scoppio & Myriam). Mimí most of all loved to spend time with family both in Canada, in Toronto and Kingston, as well as in Italy, in Bari and Bitonto where he travelled regularly. He recently attended with family and friends the weddings of two of his granddaughters: Paola married Josh Anderson in Savelletri, Puglia, Italy, in June 2024, and Corinne married Joe Callery in Picton, Ontario, Canada, in August 2024. During his last trip to Italy this past summer, a special reunion was organized for “Don Mimí” in his beloved birth town of Bitonto, with many of the people who worked for the Autolinee Scoppio his former bus company founded in 1920 by his father Paolo, and Scoppio Viaggi, the travel agencies Mimí established in Bitonto and Adelfia. Mimí had a big heart and made regular donations to his church and various organizations, and he never visited anyone without bringing a bottle of olive oil, a pack of taralli, or a bottle of Primitivo wine, from his native land of Puglia. He was deeply religious and never missed attending weekly mass whether in Canada, at St. Basil's Parish in Toronto, or in Italy, at the Santi Medici Basilica in Bitonto and the San Ciro church in Bari. Our heartfelt gratitude to all the doctors, nurses and staff at Mount Sinai hospital for their care, support and professionalism. A special thanks to Mimí’s family physician, Dr. Michael Caturay, who provided regular house calls. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Basil Catholic Church, 50 St. Joseph Street, Toronto, Ontario, Saturday 2 November, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception at Terroni Price, 1095 Yonge Street, Toronto. Final resting place for Mimí will be in the family chapel, Cemetery of Bitonto, Italy, at a future date. Donations in his memory may be made to The Sinai Health Foundation or to Food Banks Canada.
